rimless tanks.. "In" now but what's the appeal?

I love my rimless 25 gal cube. I like the minimalist look. I also like Japanese things like Subaru's and I have bonsai trees.

I think you'd have to be into German cars to understand. :D

Ahh.. you have to be into things that are overpriced and exaggerated capabilities?

I always have to laugh when I hear someone bring up "german engineering".

Hey now, I was just having a little fun with the OP based on his username and avatar. ;)

As to your comment, different strokes for different folks with different priorities.
Same goes for the rimmed vs rimless tanks.

Does Eurobracing count as rimless? Mine's Eurobraced (1/2" glass tank, Starphire front) and I love the frameless look. Not to mention having a place to rest the screen top and tools, no water splashing out, and no invert escapees. I'd go Eurobraced again for sure. I don't think I'd want to go entirely rimless.

Yep, exactly.

I'm a weird-o, I don't even like the rimless tank look, I prefer canopies.. I must be getting old.. I like the way things used to be... ;)

Eurobracing is a great alternative. If I ever have the chance to build a custom tank, it'll definitely be eurobraced.

Old fart. :wildone:

Rimless all the way. For me, it's mostly aesthetics - but I think there are some functional advantages too.

Easier temperature control, unobstructed access (to cleaning glass and mess around in the tank without a canopy in the way), can raise/lower lighting with ease, additional viewing angles, etc.

These advantages are assuming that we're also talking about using a canopy with a rimmed tank.

all of the above.....

I own a rimless now and it will be my last.Hate haveing water splashing over onto the outside while cleaning or fish splashing.I have a floating canopy and tank looks great, but will never own another.

iv been thinking about a new rimless cube lately but im thinking of just painting the existing black trim/rim white to match my stand and floating canopy...kind like those redsea tanks...still undecided as usual lol

How about this?
Rimless and the water flows over and down the sides.

Canopies look bad in my opinion, the black top looks cheap and the oak rim looks like it's a relic from the 80's. I like the modern look and I don't let anything oak into my home. :)

That is awesome, except when your kid decides to play in the water.

I think rimless is way better looking, I have rimmed now, it's just as messy as everyone thinks the rimless jobs are. I hate canopies, they don't appeal to my eye. I have my light mounted on a custom stand it's bada$$...

To each his own...

Agree with this. Canopies scream 1980s to me. And I've always had the same issues with them as I have with rimless. I'll never have another tank that ISN'T rimless. Rimless + floating LED is better than a 1980s oak everything Chinese buffet lobby tank....IMO of course.

It's all about the looks! I really love my rimless but I agree with the functional drawbacks. You can't argue the esthetics though, super clean looking. When I upgrade I'll probably end up going euro brace because I do love the open top....

You can hang a light hood over a rimmed tank just as easily as over a rimless one. I built a wooden cap to go over the black plastic trim and it looks terrific.

I don't think it's a fad, it's a preference for some. I started out with freshwater and the thing to have, even 5-10 yrs ago, was an ADA rimless tank. They're still highly coveted for nano fresh tanks, and now I see salty rimless tanks more and more. I currently have a 40b but will be upgrading to a 57 rimless soon. I already have a rimless 8 gallon set up with cherry shrimp and my 1st reef was a 12 long rimless - nothing beats the look, in my opinion.

Canopies look so heavy and clunky, but that's just me. I'm looking forward to suspending lights over my tank - they're currently on legs now.
