So, after reading many posts about people's terrible problems with rio pumps burning up, i am very concerned about mine. It is only about a month old but i dont know if i want to take the chance. I am running one on my skimmer in my sump and i was just wondering what other pumps would work. Would any other power head with the same flow rate work? thanks.

If it is a new pump, then it probably isn't oil-filled. Check to see if it is UL listed - if so, it is epoxy filled so you won't get that oil meltdown mess when it dies.

i have 2 in my tank for flow. i dont have any problems with the. they rare clog up like my Max-jets! i have also made a DYI acrylic bracket for them. the suction cups have pretty much died on me . but as far as a replacment for the skimmer, you can use a Max-jet 900, or 1200. they will add some extra flow as well.
