Rio or Tunze?

which is better to use as a return pump? 20 gallon sump and 60 gallon tank. 5/8" hose with 9W Turbo Twist UV in middle of return line. current rio 2500 pump is weak. any suggestions?

Eheim are good but they have a big foot print and are pricey. The 1260 has a footprint of approx 9x5x6, uses 65 watts, flows 635gph and costs $165.00 or so.

The tunze silence line are great pumps. I have the 1073.020 as the return on my 40B. The tunze is about 5x3x4, uses 30 watts, flows 634gph and runs around $80.00 or so. Its the quietest return pump i have used. They are a little noisy at first but once they break in you cant hear a peep out of them.

I'm going to replace the quiet one 3000 i have running in my 60 gallon with either the 1073.040 or the new controllable 1073.050. Tunze's support and warranty service are amongst the best i've dealt with.

Can't really argue with psykokid..........I have Tunze equipment & like it. But at this point nobody but nobody has proven to be as reliable as Eheim - a couple decades isn't out of the norm. If space is a consideration you might try the new compact versions - by all accounts the same quality in a smaller footprint.

Neither Tunze or Eheim are cheap............but often in this hobby you get what you pay for.

You can also search for Waterblaster on this forum - it's based on a solid pump but as yet doesn't have the track record of Eheim. (you'll note they ain't cheap either :D )

I guess I chose the Rio was because it was one of the few that had output of 5/8" for the hoses. the Turbo Twist has hose input of 5/8. I had a very hard time looking for an adapter to fit from 3/4 or 1 inch down to 5/8.

Friends don't let friends use RIO.

BTW your turbotwist with that amount of water flow is doing practically nothing. If you want it to do anything I suggest tapping into the return line and running a valve so you can push just a small amount of water through the UV and then return it back into the sump.

Between both, I'll definitly go with Tunze. But take a look at the Aquabee return pump. Got one on my new setup and really like it. Small and noiseless.;-)

Ordered and received my Tunze 1073.02 today. Waiting for my shop to finish my sump. Hopefully this new setup will be quieter and better working. I'll post pics soon. Oh, should I use pvc for plumbing or flexible tubing all around? Advantages of pvc? Thanks for the help guys.

Eheim is best for your tank. Between Rio and Tunze I'll go for Tunze. I would be wrong but Rio seems to consump more power at the same rate compare to Tunze.
