RIP Great Barrier Reef :(

I've made that point a few times over the years but it never really seemed to be understood. I just chalked it up to me having too much education in the hard sciences.

Not for a while, this reef anyway. A second one, much larger, is right behind it. September 2016 had many different articles on it. Actually rather impressive to say the least. Only thing that baffles me is why did they just discover it. Not like we haven't been mapping that part of the ocean for years on end now.

That's what I was thinking when I read about it. How can it be
"hiding" behind the GBR??? And what does "behind" even mean in this context?

Also it sounds like it is just a vast expanse of algae that leaves behind some limestone skeleton/flakes when it dies. Haven't read anything about corals or reefs as we typically think of them.

the hidden reef is a huge field of halimaeda.... and all those people yelling out alarmist!! and don't believe it..... no offense but you have absolutely no F$$kin idea, we dive these reefs every day and work closely with scientists and governing bodies..... the reef is in a poor state it has just "rebounded" from a major bleaching event but with temps already 2 degrees celcius higher than average scientists are predicting a catastrophic event very soon possibly by end of year....
all the collectors in aus are worried because if this event happens licences will be cancelled and reefs locked on the spot....
Please don't pretend to know what your talking about by saying this is all propaganda your just making yourselves appear ignorant and selfish...

Most people don't know this, but we have an amazing reef here on the west coast too called the Ningaloo reef, it is also huge and incredible. Unlike the barrier reef though, Ningaloo is very remote, it can be reached by a 15ish hour drive from Perth. There is also an incredible reef on the west side of the Abrolhos Islands, they sit around an 5 hours north of Perth, only they're about 6 hours or so offshore. I have personally visited Ningaloo and the Barrier, and there isn't much between them in terms of diversity..

You'll be taken more seriously if you can make your point without resorting to masked profanity, which is against the forum rules, btw.
Also, saying "no offense" is always followed by something offensive so why bother saying it?

Appologies for the profanity, its something im very passionate about and being on the front line it makes me upset when ppl pass it off as propaganda when clearly they have no idea....
Point taken about meaning no offence tbh i really dont care who i offend :)
And no reprimand for using initials to "mask profanity" on someone elses post.... one might think theres some double standrds there...

Not your West Coast but Northern California has some of the best diving in the world. Provided you don't mind diving cold water and have gear designed for it. Monterey is amazing. Just outside San Francisco are the Farallon Islands. Used to be a charter that made that trip. Talking about remote diving. Just had to pay attention the local land lord (AKA Great White - a rather huge one over 22' if I recall).

Sure, it is your back yard. Profanity isn't part of a constructive conversation or dialog. Be that has it may, agree or disagree, the 2nd reef behind the main is a huge deal. Not kinda, sorta type thing, but a big deal. Yes, it is Halimeda or some form of, I'm not a expert, but it is a living calcified form that turns or is limestone after it dies. The key thing they are looking into is if this what created it to begin with accumulating over time, years, etc. Again, I'm not a science guy.

Remember, mother nature has a way of recovering. Sort of like what happens to forests after a fire or other major natural disaster. Remove old growth for the new sprouts. But just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they are ignorant or wrong nor need to be reprimanded...

I was far more worried about the incorrect your being used while calling people ignorant...[emoji1]

Incorrect?.... why dont you jump onto the farm thread under sps keepers 11 odd pages for you to peruse, might find some usefull info there....

Your "your" is incorrect in both instances. It should be you're since you are joining you and are.

I shall consider myself spellchecked 👍🏻

Fwiw im not trying to link it to climate change and im not arguing over if its cyclic or not, if the reefs bounce back or not, what im saying is its hard to cop people calling out propaganda and lies when we have a lot of very concerned people over here doing their damndest to make a difference...

There was a recent outside magazine tongue-in-cheek tweet saying that (paraphrasing), 'after a long illness the GBR passed away in 2016. It was 25 million years old'. I would think most folks would read this as intended, a humorous way of expressing urgency, but clearly some interpreted it literally.

It would be the ultimate irony if, as with the thylocene (Tasmanian tiger) where the last members of its species languished in zoos, our reef tanks became a sad reminder for corals extinct in the wild.

We can do something about it, though since so many fail to even admit there's a problem I'm not optimistic.
