Hi,

I'm new and was wondering if an RO/DI water or filter is necessary for a reef tank? I only have softies in my tank

I've been tap water and using Prime to take away the ammo, chlorine, etc..

DO IT! Its a win win situation, water fo yoour fish, water for you. check em out on ebay, or mix and match. I bet you can find a decent one for 120.00-150.00 buks?

^^^^^ What he said!!!!!

only the water keeper says it in red the best

I agree--using tap water can cause alot of problems with corals due to phosphates and other dissolved substances. Metals in tap water do not evaporate from the display tank and system and slowly build up over time where they can reach toxic levels

YES!!!

Your fish and coral will thank you for it.

Amen to that. Otherwise you potentially introduce problems that are difficult to solve.

As mentioned before, yes, it will save you from soo many algae problems and not to mention the possible harm and stress to your fish.

YES.....AS all the above have said.

Don't make the mistake....as many have done.

They post your same question & then deside to NOT get a RO/DI system and take a risk...... JUST to post back here & say what a mistake they made.

A good RO/DI system from the FilterGuys will only set you back $199.00. This is a very low cost as opposed to how much money you can lose if you have a tank crash.

i have not used ro for six years now, and i just used tap water, letting the metals evaporate out. i have had algae in my tanks all six years. it has forced me to do more water changes( with tap water). in turn buying more salt for the large weekly water changes. my tank has always been 0 on no3 and po4, but i have struggled with this algae and was finally sick of it. i just bought a 100 gpd ro/di unit. i am sure it will make my life easier, and my tank look better, as it already does. although using tap water has made much more of an anal person when it comes to water changes and siphoning out algae. in hindsight i should have bought one six years ago and saved myself a lot of money and time. i would suggest just spending the money, and you, your fish, your corals, and your plants will be a lot happier. mine are, i can still see the smiles on their little faces

Your story is just what I was talking about.

IMO...a RO/DI is a ( Must Have ) if you want a great tank.

Oh Ya......The last time I saw smiles on my Fishes faces.......I'm sure it was the amount of beer that I had ....Not really the RO/DI water.

But I may be wrong.........

I love it so much I built a bigger garage for my RO-

The problem with this statement is that metals don't evaporate. As capn_hylinur mentioned above, the water evaporates but the metals stay behind. Sooner or later the total load of metals gets high enough to hurt your animals.

Karl,

I think es meant that the metals were accumulating in the tank. Not subliming into the atmosphere.
