RO vending machines, any good? Where are they?

I've seen a bunch of these distilled water machines outside of some grocery stores (forgot where, tough), pretty cheap water too. Are they on par with a home RO system?

Anyone remember where some in Milpitas are located?

safeway and raleys all have them. just make sure it says ro somewhere on the machine. i have never tested the one i used to use, but it never caused any problems.
there is a ro water shop in san jose right next to sun aquarium. you get to see quang (nice store owner) and get water at the same time. quang sells catalina water cheep as well.

Don't use the water machines at your grocery store, MOST, but not all are just sediment and carbon filtered machines, which only take care of mainly taste and particles. Go to a pure water store (usually ran by the asian folks) that mainly sells water. They'll show you their huge RO systems and giant tanks which are impossible to fit in those dispensers at safeway!

yes like i said make sure they say ro!
my local raleys and safeway have ro. now i just buy the prepacked gallons. They last a week now that i only have a 2.7

Actually, most of the machines I have seen are all RO and UV. At least the ones in front of safeway and albertsons.

they may say it, but the filters may be old and not working right, the UV can be past its prime. RO units are cheap enough ...... just buy one and you know its really RO then!!!

PS. all the "vending machines" that I have seen close to me (Longs, Nob Hill, Albertsons) are simply particulate and carbon filters but who knows when those filters were changed. Oh and dont forget about all the great little bacterial colonies that form in the water lines post filtration. Little kids touching the nozzle, birds drinking from it, grandma putting her ancient un clean carboy water bucket on the machine. Not to sound like a germ phobe but you would never catch me at one of those public machines!!!!

Agreed, the best thing to do is getting an RO unit. There are small units that you can even got for under $100. Depening on your size of tank, it will pay for itself within the first few months of water changes. Espcially if you are paying $.50 from most LFS.

Before I got my Typhon III, I bought water from a Glacier machine. They maintain it about every 2 weeks and they leave a sticker on it saying when it was last serviced.

Naturally, I thought it was crap and I bought my RO/DI with a TDS Meter.

Guess what, the Glacier water tested out at 001 and my RO/DI is 000. That said, the water out of my tap is only 070; so, I don't think the Glacier machine in my area has to work that hard to do it's job. The Glacier also uses UV if I remember right.

Before I used the Glacier machine, I used to waste gas and bridge toll to drive to Nippon to buy what I thought was RO/DI water (well it wasn't).

While my Glacier machine was good, nothing beats the convenience of making your own.

Best of luck,

Roy

Roy -

I am jealous. The tap water in my house is anywhere from 700 - 950 ppm. We don't drink water where I live - we crunch them down.

San Jose will probably be lousy since most of the supply comes out of the Delta (same for Southern Alameda County and most of CC County).

Areas that get the water piped in from the Sierra (San Francisco, Most of the Peninsula and Oakland) have much better water.

In Southern Marin, it's pure rain water from Mt Tam (with a little bit of dust and acid from Asia). It's so soft, you have to add hardness (ie calcium) to swimming pools.

Best of luck,

Roy

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I plan to invest in a home unit soon, just an RO, not a DI. But until then I may try that Glacier vendo, or just the LFS.

The water here in Cupertino is measuring 192ppm on my TDS meter... ouch. I also use to get water from the local Glacier stand for the tank. In fact I still do, just not for the Tank (water cooler). Just tested the Glacier water, and it is coming up 3ppm. I just set up a RO system in the garage for the Tank, and I am getting around 3 - 5 ppm depending on when I clean the brute can I am collecting it in.

I used to get my RO water from Culligan. They test their water regularly. I had no problem at all. Now I have my own RO system got tired of going to culligan.

Water from the Glacier water vending machines at Albertson's and Raley's are great. Most even have a last serviced date on it so you know when the last time the filters were changed/etc...

I get my water from the RO/DI glacier machines at Safeway. It's serviced every Tuesday, which is when I go and get the water. $0.30 a gallon.
