I got him first week in May. He is from the leftover "slow to color" group sara posted on page 28 in this thread. I THINK he is the one on the very bottom of that pucture

There are a few pictures on page 29 of him the week I got him.

He's 1 year this month :)

for those of you that have ordered rod's clowns, did you QT? We know they are coming from a reliable source. I just have concerns about keeping high water quality in my 10gallon qt tank. I would probably plan to change out 10%/week with my reef tank water. any thoughts would be appreciated...

i just got my pair of onyx clown fish and they are awesome i love them. Rod is a highly recommended if you are looking for nice healthy onyx clown fish.

Here are some pics of my Onyx that arrived yesterday:

Looking good, GSMguy. How long would you say you've had them? Just wondering when I can expect mine to color in.

I haven't gotten a chance to read through this whole thread. But can someone give me their opinion as to which of Rod's clowns to get? I'm leaning toward the more expensive ones (more black coloration and second bar starting to appear) vs. the single bar (obviously younger). The price difference isn't too significant, but just wanted to see if someone could comment on the difference in likelihood (if there is one) of these becoming "onyx". Thanks.

id get the nicest ones he has available....

FWIW they have all have equal chance of developing onyx but i would want the best.

...exactly what I'm thinking! ...but is it necessary? (sometimes I have a tendency to spend more on this hobby than is needed - I don't think I'm alone on that one either - lol)

Genetically they should all have equal chance of becoming onyx. Maybe others can chime in as to which ones they got (ie. more expensive or less).

this pricing scheme is so new that i doubt anyone has had much color change in their fish to know if there is a difference, i would guess that some has to do with age some are just slower to develop, most all of them turn black.

some of the most colored nicest fish he ever let out were the 70 dollar ones but he hasnt been able to keep them that long since then, they sell to quick.

That makes sense. I haven't been around this hobby long enough to know that he had changed his pricing scheme. It is very understandable that he goes through these so fast when they are mature enough to ship - simply beautiful clowns!!!

With any luck, I will have mine by the end of the week!

Any updates on the current stock? Does he have many of the "more expensive ones." I would like to get some that have the fuller-black pattern.

Our local club tried to order, but never got a response from Rod. Unfortunate, since we were all really looking forward to getting a pair of Rod's onyx...

Rod is not hard to get a hold of just call him and leave a message with a phone number....

I've reached Rod 3 out of 4 times I've called him. I've also recieved replies to emails. I would say look at his store hours and call either within those hours or maybe an hour before.

Keep in mind, Rod runs the store, makes his own Rod's food, answers tons of questions from phone calls &e-mails and raises the onyx...
I'm sure if you call back you should be able to get a hold of him, he's at the shop practically every day...
