Room under tank, above sump...

How much room should be left under the tank above the sump to work with?

what work will be performed on the sump that requires work once it's setup and running?

skimmer cup has to be emptied---often. Brands differ as to how much top clearance for this operation, also how tall the unit is.

Skimmer is going to be external because it is too tall to fit under the tank/stand.

Skimmer going to go into its own cabinet next to the tank and stand.

Possible operation depending on what you have in the sump: Cleaning detritus out of sump, adding reactors/carbon, changing filter socks, pruning chaeto, cleaning algae scrubber.

Carbon, GFO, Skimmer, UV, and Calc Reactor are all external.

Do I need anything else btw?

30"????

I'm planning on my stand being 30" total in height... with a 36"T tank, that's nearly 6ft I'd have to compete with (I'm 5'8")

my sump is 48"x24"x24"T.

My skimmer is 30" so it will be in a separate cabinet. I was probably going to put the gfo/carbon/Calc reactor/co2 tank/UV light into the cabinet as well.

I use a painter's ladder to access my tank: the stand is about 36 high, the tank 36, and the canopy somewhat over 10, so I know whereof you speak. It can be done with a ladder, a Tunze Care magnet, and a net for stuff that falls onto the sand, but it is an adventure.

The separate cabinet is a great idea and will work.

so other than chaeto, socks, and refugium maintenance, I won't be in the sump a whole lot because all my other sump equipment is external...

with detachable piping for the drains, socks won't be terrible to change out with small space... just seems like detritus, algae, and chaeto maintenance is where ill need a little room...

There really is no rule it's just what ever allows you to get to your equipment under the stand and work with it. Other then that the only thing to consider is if the tank is viewed standing up or sitting down. Is it going to look right to you and other people? If so then go for it.

tanks going I'm the master bedroom next to my bed, that is about 36" high, so I'll be eye level with the bottom of the tank(just above the sandbed) when sleeping.
