Jeremy,
Any word on optimal depth for these?

Nothing yet, however I would imagine you'll be fine anywhere in the 6" - 10" range. Optimal I would imagine is going to be 7" - 8". This not guaranteed though, and I will post more specs as I receive them.

Any talks on an external version?

Not yet. I would imagine it will be a while until an external is available.

Hi Jeremy,

There's a small typo on the air draw on your site. It says 150 lph. It should say 1500. (that or it's the wimpyest red dragon pump ever :))

Too bad, I could have made this my next skimmer and cancel my Hurricone Cat-2 external order.

Do you have any room to work with in your sump at all?

No...I know it sucks, I could have so many options if I had space under my stand.

This is why I used to run an external AquaC EV-240 and decided to upgrade to the Hurricone. I like the external ATB, but feel that the price is excessive. This is why I got excited when a friend forwarded the link to this post, an ATB contender...for less.

An ATB Killer, you mean! :D

It looks like you are running an eshopps 200 or 300 sump. You could get the skimmer to fit, but the manifold running horizontal across the front of the sump would have to be moved to where it runs across the back of the sump. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but just by looking at the photo you could easily cut half way between the elbow and the "T" labelled skimmer, turn the union on the pump 1/4 turn to aim towards the back, and run a 1.5" line straight back towards the backside, and elbow 90" right, and glue your manifold back in.

Ok, ok, so I'm really trying to sell you one of these, but in all reality the way you have the plumbing set up, it wouldn't be much of a task!

Its the large Eco Reef sump/refugium model, I modified it dividing the main chamber into two so I could have the AquaC in there...I hated it, now I'm going to remove the division so i can have all the space for macro-algae and DSB. Maybe is different because of this type skimmer, the truth is that i re-did my plumbing about 2 months ago in preparation for a new EXT skimmer. I'm really not contemplating messing with that again. It's not really that simple, here is a better pic...

I don't blame you for trying to sell me this new skimmer and I'm sure it will be sweet. For now I will only consider externals.

Damn it Jeremy. I just ordered an ATB a week ago. A few days later this news breaks...

I dont even have the ATB yet!

chaci - I understand completely, I wouldn't want to go through all of that again either!

Treg - You can always stop shipment or slap a return label on that thing! ;) hehe

I'll be honest, we've got some ATB Econo's on order as well, only a few of each size. I'm just hoping I'll be able to get rid of them at cost now once they come in.

Well, lets put it this way.... expect to see some side by side pictures. ;)

Econo 1050 with airstar upgrade vs the RE Alpha 250.

Royal Exclusiv ALPHA 250 38w @ 1500LPH air draw $999

Econo 1050 54w @ 1300LPH air draw $1199 - $1399

The bodies are almost the exact same size. It should be a good test. I would really like to see some photos. I'm assuming you'll probably dedicate a thread to the comparison?

Yeah might as well I guess. Never thought I would own 2 skimmers like this!
I hashed really hard over a BK and the ATB tho.
Guess I will find out first hand...

I've got a dywer RMB-53D coming in the mail too.

Econo 1050 54w @ 1300LPH air draw $1199 - $1399

Econo 1050 is $999 with the 2 mini-airstar pumps and $1199 with the upgrade to the 1500 airstar.

Pretty much the same as the Alpha 250 after the intro price ends.
