Royal-Exclusiv / Vertex Cone Skimmer Club

ya I know but its was to big for my setup so im hoping that this skimmer is going to keep up since I'm running Acans Blasto's , Micromusso's, a few leathers a huge clam, lobo's too and a lots of fish like 21 in the 150 gal

how do you keep the nitrate down w/ that many fish.

That's somewhat of a small volume / bioload for the Alpha 250, however you should still be able to get it work, and to not overflow. My first guess is that the overflowing is due to varying sump level. Also, 8" is too shallow for the Alpha 250. I would highly recommend running at 9" - 9.5", and with a very light load maybe even 10". Take a look at these couple of tricks, as well as installing the 47mm (shortest nozzle) for maximum air draw.

Here are some photos:

First to chambers are always at the same level

Thank you for the photos! That always helps immensely when answering questions on a person's setup. I think that by changing to the 47mm nozzle, and going to 9.5" of sump depth you are going to see a world of difference! Did your skimmer come with a 47mm, or a 56mm and 59mm?

I think it came with the 56 and 59. I will take a picture of the 2 I have tonight.

I will need to try and locate a 47

I will attempt to put the skimmer at 9.5 inch water depth this weekend.

Thank You for your assistance

General Question:
How often do Vertex owners adjust the skimmer once the feel it is dialed in?

Or, has anyone found that once dialed in they do not have to adjust.

Go back to your vendor and ask them to give you a 47mm, they shouldn't charge you for it, it's a free upgrade.

I haven't adjusted my Alpha 250 that I have running for probably 6 months now. My Alpha 170 and 200 haven't been adjusted for 3-4 months.

The Alpha 200, 250, and 300 will all the tunable venturi available now. However, there is no performance gain or decrease in using it.

I now have the following sizes:

59mm
56mm which is in the pump
51mm
47mm

I am going to install the 47mm and see how it does at a 12 inch depth. I hope to get another stand put together this weekend to test it at 10inches.

Thanks Again and I will be sure to post my findings

well Im at 3 turns out and the stock pipe is 80% closed i would like to have the stock pipe not open so much, is there a way to fix that i am starting to see a change in the performance I think:bounce2:

any ideas i personally think that i should have gotten the 200 instead of the 170:twitch:

I think the 170 is the better fit for your size system in my opinion. The 170 will handle even more than what you have actually. Are you still running the skimmer at 8"?

Yes jeremy I cant adjust the water level i can raise the skimmer if I had to but not lower it

Hi Jeremy,

Problems again with the skimmer. It all started earlier today when I connected my chiller up. Could that be causing the skimmer to react?

I have tried everything mentioned previously but with no success. I pulled the pump apart to check the impeller. All appears ok.

The bubbles are similar to before (see picture) however the foam head seems to be surging now? It rises and drops continuously around 2-3 inches every 30-45 seconds.

The skimmer is still sitting in approx 9" water.

How do I check the air line as I think that maybe the problem?

Any other ideas...?

New alpha cone 170 question

New alpha cone 170 question

Hi all,

I just got my alpha cone 170 up and running. It's been in the sump now for about 5 days. It's in a 120gal DT with a 40gal sump. Its sitting in 9 in of water with the screw out 2 turns.

I have a problem with microbubbles coming out of the skimmer output. I have tried multiple settings with the venturi screw. Nothing will stop the bubbles(all the way unscrewed versus screwed all the way in or anything in between).

It's skimming great with my only complaint being the bubbles. My question is - Does the skimmer need more time to break in (ie let a slim coat build up on the inside) before the bubbles will stop? If not what can I do to fix my problem? Thanks for the help.

Hi, I have a 120gallon tank with primarily sps corals and a Bubble King 180 mini first generation. I have been thinking the BK 180 mini may be too big for my tank and I was thinking of replacing my current skimmer with the alpha cone 170. Any thoughts?

Anyone have problems with their skimmer pump where it suddenly stops working or the impeller stops spinning?

I have taken my pump apart and nothing seems to be preventing it from spinning . . given it a vinegar bath for a few hours but the problem still persists.

Just some background I have had the Alpha 200 skimmer for almost a year and the pump has been working flawlessly until this issue.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
