Royal-Exclusiv / Vertex Cone Skimmer Club

Hello everyone. I just bought my skimmer second hand and I'm kinda bummed. This thing produces way too many bubbles! the foam rises and overflows like crazy. I tried adjusting the wedge pipe with no success. If i partially block some of the pump inlet with my finger i can get the bubble line lower other wise it overflows like crazy. Im thinking about going to home depot and buying a valve or something to adjust the amount of air going into the pump. Any suggestions or ideas? Maybe someone covered this already but I just couldn't find it amount so many posts. THanks everyone.

Good morning Jeremy

I just picked a used alpha 200. It looks like it has the old style Venturi that I plan on ordering and came with only one tube to connect the rd to skimmer body.

Can you look at the pics and see if I have to order anything else.

@kuyatwo, that is a complete pump, ready to be hooked up to a skimmer. Personally, I'd just stick with the venturi that's in there, the adjustable venturi is not a necessity by any means.

kuyatwo, In addition to what Jeremy stated, the small gray connector is used for injecting Ozone if you want to. If not, it requires no tubing at all.

Thank you for the response I plan on replacing my old skimmer this weekend.

Looking to upgrade skimmer?

Considering upgrading my skimmer to the 170 or 200. Which one would work better for a 150g with 70g sump, med to heavy bioload and some sps.

Just setup up a 6 month old alpha 170. For some reason it's just not producing much skimmate. It's either super wet or the foam will not crest over into the cup the gunk just collects at top of the cone tube. When setting up where should I adjust water level to for foam to bubble over top not wet. I've tried in 10" of water and am now at 8.5" same exact results

Jeremy,

My reef tank will be 60x26x25, with a 100 gallon sump, which of the Alpha skimmers would work best for me. I should have enough space for any of them.

Thanks

I would suggest using the Alpha 200. I think the Alpha 250 would be slightly big for this application. HTH!

What would be the biggest size tank that an Alpha 170 can handle?

After I posted my above question I did some more research and thought you were going to say the 170 size as I saw where you recommended an Alpha 170 for a 180 gallon. My tank is around 168 gallons with the 100 gallon sump. It is because of the size of the sump?

Thanks for the help.

I think a 180g system with an average size sump 20g - 30g of actual water or so is just fine. I recommended the 200 due to your sump size. The depth is in the 8.5" - 10" range for those.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the help.

When everything is set up my tank will have 162 gallons of water and 57 gallons in the sump (not 100 gallons my bad).

Hate to be a pest but which Alpha would be the best choice for a moderate stocked tank. It seems I am at the border between the 170 and 200.

Thanks for the help again.

Alpha 200

Alpha 200

What is the dimension from base of the skimmer to the bottom of the collection cup drain of the 200? I was wondering this because my sump is 18" tall with a constant sump depth of 8-1/2".

I have been using the AlphaCone 200 for over a year now - Love it. The past week it has been producing an extreme amount of micro bubbles, overflowed multiple times, and just hasn't been skimming very efficiently.

Yesterday - I pulled it all apart to clean, check for snails, or any other problems I might find. The pump looked fine, no issues I could visibly see. Once I started cleaning the skimmer body, I heard something rolling around in the bottom. Took it apart expecting a snail, and I found a Stainless Steel set-screw. It looks like it came from the skimmer somewhere, I just don't know where. The screw itself looks to be a 10-32 or smaller and only about .375 in length. Not very big.

Any ideas where it came from?

Unknown Screw...

Hi Enjoy..

this screw has nothing to do with your Alpha-Skimmer. All metallic-Parts on the Alpha Line was made from Titanium. The stainless Steel Screw on your Picture is not comming from the Skimmer or Red Dragon Pump.

Maybe from the Avast-Pipecleaner ?

Hope it helps...

best regards.. Klaus Jansen
