Alpha 200

Alpha 200

Something is up with my alpha 200. When I first purchased it I ran it and 9.5" of water depth with the pipe 75% open. Two years later I now have to run it 90% closed at 11" of water depth to get decent foam head. I noticed it started acting this way once I started running bio pellets. I figured the problem would go away after a few days but it's only gotten worse. I disassembled the pump and cleaned it but no change on the skimmate. Do I need to completely disassemble and clean? I'm trying to avoid that since I can't just pull the skimmer out. I would need to take out the entire sump.

Disassemble the silencer, pull out the foam that's in there and throw it away. Put it all back together and see if that helps any. Also, are any of the pins on your impeller broken off or anything?

Jeremy,
Quick question, because I may be in the same boat, what does the foam truly do? I take it that they put the foam in there as noise dampening? Does it increase the noise level if removed?

The impeller is fine. All pins are intact. How would i go about removing the silencer? I took a look at the manual that i found on the Premium Aquatics website and could not find anything regarding the foam on the silencer.

Not sure if it matters but my skimmer was one of the first batch when it was a pre order.

The top part of the silencer comes. I took a sharp knife and got mine off. Comes off fairly easy. Comes apart where the white top meets the red body.

I pulled out the foam with no change on the skimmer performance. Maybe the motor is going bad. It's going on 2 years now.

That sucks... I've had mine for over 2 years now and strong as ever. These RDs are pretty solid pumps so it is strange... maybe you got a dud or maybe we are missing something.... what type of volute do you have? Also, how patent is your airline..... also, one good test to do is actually remove the pump from the skimmer altogether, fill up your tub and see how much water that baby moves without any of the volute inserts. If it moves a lot of water, then there is something wrong w/ volute or airline because your water pump should be fine. Now if it isn't moving anything and it's been cleaned out and all things have been aligned correctly, then the problem is probably the pump.

Hope all goes well!

Cheers,
John
