Running Halides at night?

hey guys.. are there any potential problems if I program my timers to turn on the MH from 8pm to 3am? (9 hrs photoperiod) to avoid DWP's "peak hours"? I will probably do the same thing for my Skimmer and other equipments.

Per DWP website:
Remember, "High Peak" hours are 1:00 p.m. - 4:59 p.m., weekdays.
"Low Peak" hours are 10:00 a.m. - 12:59 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. - 7:59 p.m., weekdays.
The "Base" hours are 8:00 p.m. - 9:59 a.m. weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Has anyone else tried this?

none at all, Iv'e reversed my photo period for heat/cooling reasons.

My bill came yesterday $665, $500 of that just electricity and that isnt even DWP!!!

Your 8pm to 3am is 7 hours, not 9 like you said?

I run mine from 7pm to 3am, since I'm never home until around then anyway =)

sounds like a good idea i run mine from noon to 9pm and i get home at 8 sometimes only one hour then its moon lights. i think ill go for the 6pm to 3am that way all corals are awake when i get home :D good idea guys thanks

xtm, is there a price difference? where can i find more information on their site?

Per DWP, you pay about double during peak hours!
A higher price is charged during “high peak” hours, which are between 1:00 p.m. and 4:59 p.m., Monday through Friday. The price for electricity during these hours is about twice the cost of the standard rate price.

So it looks like running your Halides at night gives the Reefers a win-win situation: First, you pay LESS because your lights are on during non-peak hours and second, the house is typically cooler at night so your chiller doesn't have to work as hard even with the lights on.

Wow you are right, to do pay double for peak hours. You pay a whole $.14/kilowatt for peak. If I paid $.14/kilowatt, I would run my lights 15 hours per day whenever I felt like it. Peak hours or not. I'd probably also add a couple prop tanks too. :D

I run 5pm to 10pm daily.
I don't see any reason to run them at any time other than when you want to. The corals don't care, as long as they get enough light.

Damn I run mine from 10am to midnight, thats like 14 hours, is that bad, not really worried about the bill though, and they are just PC's and a couple of T5's.

There is no real problem with running your lights too long, assuming you don't have heat or bill problems. Basically, once the corals' zooxanthellae are saturated, they will produce as much food for the corals as they can. After that, it does no harm, but not any good, either.

how do they know when you are running what?

Do you have new electric meters with digital display, if not, there is no way for them to know..

bill

yes in some areas the meters are completly computer controlled and in some of the new systems are actually online interactive which means the utility co. can actually see your meters reading at any time such as in a report of power outage etc. Technology my friend it is hitting everywehre...

And since I am in an apartment with a window a/c unit I run my halides from around 6pm til 1am... Just need to change the noisy fans the hamilton light fixture has it is really loud...
