Sad day for my Tank

Oblio
I do not know it all and I don't try to come across that way but we don't fully understand the effects adding amino's has on every coral in our systems. Being careful is just as simple as we should be careful with all things we put in our tank. My thoughts on Bigz's issue right now is amino dosing. Sure I can be wrong but from my experience and a lot of others experience my money is on aminos. We will probably never know for sure because triton tests probably won't show a real issue beyond a guess. They only test some elements if I remember correctly. Not bacteria or enzymes or whatever else could be in the water.
My experience with aminos is this. I started trying aminos right around 2006 or so. I have tried 7 brands that I can think of off the top of my head right now. I have had i think 5 different systems at different times that I have tried aminos in. These have had halides or t5s or led or halides with t5 or t12's. One system was a 265 that was about 75% or more sps. Some frags, some 6-8 inch colonies. One brand I tried called for if I remember correctly a dose of say 10 drops. I would add 1 drop at the time recommended. Nothing happened good or bad. Wait until I was supposed to add again and add 1 drop. Nothing happened. I would say ok nothing is happening so I will bump up the dose to 2 drops. I think I was adding the drops at night or towards the night and I go to bed and wake up in the morning to several skeletons. Just vanished with maybe one or two of the corals having the last couple % of the tissue coming off. Only certain corals were effected. Not knowing what the cause was you do it all over again with more death in the same short time frame.
When I have changed most of my tanks I have sold everything. Rocks, Fish. coral except only a couple. New lights, skimmer. Everything. Then with a new tank I am always an idiot and chasing more color so I start carbon dosing and eventually get some new kind of aminos and Bam, more dead coral in just a few hours. Yes I did this again last month. With Acropower. I am not against the product or brand I just urge people to use caution. What we don't truly understand can hurt us. At least what I don't truly understand hurts me.

Rob, I certainly ment no offense in my statement. I apologize if it came across that way. And I couldn't agree with you more on the idea of what we don't know can hurt us. In the end most of us, me included, are just guessing with our attempts to keep these beautiful animals alive and thriving.

Mike:

Thank you sent you a text.

Mrharvard:
You are %100 correct about keeping SPS. All softies are doing great.

Rob:
When I rebuild I will take different approach on carbon dosing and AA as will as 2 part.

Easttuth:

Thanks I think I am going to get for a few months.

Update:

So far I have done another 50% water change 100gallons. All made with new media in RO unit. Softies still looking great.

Tested for the below and found no alarms:
Salifert K
Cooper

Still pending test for Chlorimine ( Which at this point I not sure is that alone did it).

Softies are unaffected
and Pearlberry and shortcake look great.
Loripse is brown and lost its purple color
Neon green ORA colony is white
and xxl large green digi is now light brown.
Blue millie is light blue
Caps are a bit lighter but appear un effected

I have been running Purigen and Carbon for about 24 hours. Added another 2 cups.

Tank water is super clear and skimmer is barely producing skimate.

I am making more water today. At this point I am researching new tank options and will soon do a complete tear down. (Live stock for sale post to follow soon).

Going to try a suggestion that was pm'ed to me and air out house.

Spoke with Wife and she placed tape on floor to show her how a 300DD size would look like and she quickly killed that Idea (which is the one I want and is well with in budget). She is leaning towards the 120x30x30 config Fish only or a 96x30x30 SPS. Also in the mix is a 84x24x30 with along side of it a 65 gallon 36x18x24 frag tank to seprate systems.

But for now I will be exiting hobby for a few months and start a rebuild thread once I figure out direction.

I even like my wifes idea of using current setup and upgrade my planted discus tank and stick to that until I figure out reef or do a smaller sps tank next to it. (the thought of cleaning that 210 from all the uncrusting stuff is freighting).

Again thank you all for suggestions and support. I will be back for sure.

Good luck Z. Sorry to hear about your frustrations. The Forest Fire Digi and Blue Mili I bought from you will hopefully be available for fragging to give it back free of charge once you reboot.

Cuzza,

Thanks. I must say to all those who have texted and offered free frags / buy back for $1. it is amazing to me how much support exist and I thank you very much. (By the way you are not helping me exit hobby easy :). )

I will make sure to pay it forward when I return.

You still have those Forest Fire Digis? I will take some of those corals off you to fund your new setup. When its setup just let me know and I can give you some frags.

Sorry for your loss. I know how it feels.it goes south so fast. Your parameters and dosing sounds like what I did. corals looked awesome then several started STN. A birds ora shortcake RTN over night. I thought it was result of skimmer breaking when I vodka dosed . Now maybe it was amino dosing. I still feel skimmer break was the trigger of whatever happened. did you have skimmer issues before your tank went south? I started doing small WC each day until I replaced 80% water. This seems to stop STN, corals color coming back. This also had no effect on fish, shrimp or snails just some of my coral. Now only dose for cal, alk, mg and told myself going back to basics or one more incident maybe freshwater. You definitely get tested by this hobby some times.

Hey Z,

Sorry to hear the news. As much as we think we know about this hobby I am sure that we are still missing valuable information. I try to keep things as simple as possible and have as much critter variety as I can. Knock on wood... I have not had any issues, yet. If there is anything you need just let me know. Remember, I am just one bridge away from you!

Cesar

Rob,

That would be really nice. Although I am not sure that TLF Acropower is directly behind my crash. I have been using it for over 6 months with great results. At this point anything is possible.

Cesar,

Thanks I am trying to see if I can turn this around.

Here is a question for all. I am running a reactor loaded with (Fresh Carbon every 2 days) Carbon should I not see improvements if the issue is coral warefare?

Also is I am running purigen. Water is crystal clear.

Only time I see some PE or slight improvement is when I do a water change. A day later everything is unhappy. I took out Jebao to make sure magnets are not the issue as that is the only magnet I have. I installed one of my spare rw-15 and only running that one.

RO unit has all new membranes.

I even feel like starting up my UV. No Copper levels on test.

Welcome any other suggestions. Fish and Shrimps and Softies are doing great.

Thanks,

Hey Z,

Are you still dosing vodka or anything else? I noticed recently when I had my issue with the bacterial bloom that things didn't get back to normal until I stopped the dosing for a few days. You can start it back up once you notice the corals getting back to normal.

Also, another thing to consider is adding prime to the RODI water before adding it to the tank. I have read that the Mono-Chloramines are very hard to filter and adding Prime to it may help with neutralizing them before they get dissolved into your tank and rock.

I have an RODI, but I still use Prime just in case.

Big,
Carbon question, I was under the impression that yes it would absorb this but as Im not a chemist I couldn't be sure. my only suggestion although its small would be to throw in a couple of the Poly Filters just to make sure you're not missing something basic. They are pretty cheap and nothing bad can come of throwing them in. I use them when it "seems" something might be amiss in the tank and want to just cover the basics as a potential culprit.
