sad day in the keys

just got in from a dive off islamorada and there is a massive brain bleaching going on.stuff i grew up diving around is passing away at an alarming rate, and from what i see no one is doing anything about itI fear by the time the people who make the big decisions get around to this, the recovery will be to late.In the last 30 years ive seen an entire reef die off with not much concern from anyone who can help.I pray that the trouble that this ecosystem is in can be helped before the point of no return approaches.Ive seen the elkhorn and staghorn all but disappear from most of the keys an i am concerned the brains may follow their path.

No one wants to do anything about global warming. Obama is trying but he's really up against it.

Short term industrial interests must come first.

It's the same here in the UK too.

couldn't be the thousands of people diving the reef each year, or the ocean front homes dumping fertilizer and pesticeds in the ocean, or the cities and cruise ships dumping sewage and garbage into the oceans.

it has to be all the Co2 causing the oceans to boil over and kill all the coral.

Winner !!

I read the current issue of TFH and they had an article about the Keys ans its sad condition. They showed a photo of a coral inundated with algae at Pennekamp's Coral Reef Park...they stated it is also because of the removal of the mangroves that helped filter the excess nutrients. They are removing the mangroves to clear for beachfront properties. I was just in Miami and planned on going to Pennekamp, but Hurrican Danny was wrecking havoc, so we had to cancel...will it be a bitter sweet trip for me next time? I really don't want to see any sad states of the truth :-(

Some good news. I just returned from a dive trip to the Keys and found the coral to be in a better condition then last year. In fact, I found this not in Pennekamp:

As you can see it is a stand of Elkhorn coral that was wiped out and is actually coming back and growing. There was a good inch of new growth on it. I have only seen live stands in Pennekamp in previous dives.

Here is another shot showing the corals. I hope this is a sign of the future being better than the last few years have been.

Very sad to hear of more precious ecosystem lost due to myriad human influences. Nice pics Slapshot, need to go diving soon!

Ocean temps are up this year and bleaching is quite wide spread. It can be a natural process but recovery of the corals is directly related to water quality.
Trying to "restock" reefs were they have been destroyed by the deteriorating environment seems a little misguided unless you fix the water quality first.

Exactly...you don't see people planting new tree seedlings on a hillside still on fire!

Al Gore might of not invented the internet...
but he did invent Global Warming.

35% of all of our co2 we let into the air goes into the ocean. Actual study, it is effecting many species of fish and invertebrates that can be extinct in the next 30 or so years if it continues.

Yes the fertilizer and dumping is a HUGE factor but ocean tempratures and global is also.

some may not like al gore but he talks about ALL of this. I cant believe the close mindness of some people. Does it really hurt to be more enviromentally healthy in a chance that it can save our planet?

Elan, if I may...

When you include data from a "study" you may want to include a citation to the study you are referencing. It will lend far more credibility to your argument. Otherwise you risk appearing as though you are just some guy on the internet fabricating data to support your position.
