Sailfin vs. Hippo

I just added a 3"Blue Hippo tang to my 180g reef.

The Sailfin is a solid 5" has been in the tank for over a year. I just added a 3inch blue tang and the Sailfin immediately chased the hippo into a corner above the returns. Will they work it out and eventually co-exist or will the Sailfin stress the hippo out and send him to his death?

Just hope that the blue doesnt get stresed out and become a source of ick for the tank. I have seen hippos stress out and contract ick in a NY minute.

It'll only get Ich if the Ich parasite is already living in your tank.

If you do have Ich present in your system, like probably half our tanks do, then stress can definitely cause him to lower his immunity to it and succumb.

ICH is part of our lifes and hobby, I have three tangs -hippo-powder blue and yellow, no problems . Good luck

If they don't settle out, then maybe try removing all three, and re-introducing them to the tank at the same time, so noone has the homefield advantage.

Argh, this is a huge tank with large rocks everywhere

how about I turn the lights off and on until they are all disoriented?

You might be on to something... the Rave technique.

Strobe lights, trance music with heavy base, and drop a little Xtasy in the tank.  :hmm3: :jester: :wildone: :lolspin:

ive heard if you hold a mirror up to the tank so the old tang sees his own reflection while introducing the new tang it should confuse the old one long enough for the new one to get settled in ;)

before you added the fish you should have fed them t take the idea away for that moment a new guy got dropped in the tank...

just feed them as normal and the agression should go away.....hopefully.....and it can last up to a weeks time so don't expect from one minute to the other.

changing rockwork around is the next best thing to throw off the area control and dominance.

i overfeed till the point that they are so fat that they dont care. I have a Hippo, Naso, 3 Yellows, Valamigi, Mimic, Purple, and Sailfin and have no problem with aggression.

They are used to the auto feeder feeding 3 times per day then frozen and seaweed at night. When i added the auto feeder i did notice that the yellows stopped thier in fighting and all my fish seemed to calm down.

Also GREAT pic Scratch!

Thank you everyone for your input!

The comments and ideas are very useful

The mirror trick seems like a great idea!

 cheers all

You may also try putting the new fish in the tank in a small clear box with ventilation holes for about a day. they can get used to themselves but not hurt each other.
