Sally light foot crabs

I'm talking about the one also reffered to as Nimble Spray Crab. Just looking for opinions of them by people who have them. I've heard good and bad things about them, but just want some more input.

When they're small they'll eat worms, pods and anything else they can find. When they get bigger they'll go after small fish.

Other than that they're reef safe.;)

I have one, he is a waste, was tod he'd eat hair algae, I don't know what he does. Luckily I'm in transition from one tank to another, and he isnt moving to the new one

just out of curiosity, are you not moving it because it doesnt do anything or did it do something like kill off a fish or something

Hi Kemo

We have a Sally Lightfoot in our 120 reef and we haven't had any problems with it at all. We've had it about 1 year now and it mostly just hangs out under the rocks, picking. I've never seen it go after any other fish or shrimp (I was afraid it would go after the Peppermint shrimp...but at last count they are all still there). I've read they can develop a "Jekyll & Hyde" syndrome....turning agressive in time, but so far our's has been fine. We do give it special feedings though. We feed it pieces of clam or silversides with a long stick. It's funny...when it sees the stick coming...it literally pounces on it for the food. I think they are cute and harmless.

It hasn't done anything bad that I know of, it is a little scary looking, and he was supposed to eat algae and didn't. I don't want to risk him killing anything either. And I will never be able to catch him in my new tank, this tank will be easy.

i had one, it just passed away. he was a great crazy, nuts buger. he hardly stops moving and quick, very quick. i miss the guy, it was like having a spider in the tank

I advise against them: they can get large and they're so fast and so smart you'd have to take your tank apart to catch same.

Sk8r...

Do you know if a Sally Lightfoot will go after Berghia? I put 8 of them in my tank to try to get a hand on aiptasia....and I haven't seen hide nor hair of them. The Sally would be the only culprit I could think of.

Sorry to hear that, it's always sad to have a tank mate die. Anyway thanks everyone for the input. I think I'm gonna go for it next time I'm at the LFS. :fish1:

another question here might be who preys on a sally lightfoot?

I have 2 males in my 210g reef with about 200lbs of L/R. They stay very busy eating off of the rock all day long.

I noticed one day that one of them had a missing claw and 2 legs, i'm assuming the two of them got in a scuffle. The other one looked fine.

Another time i noticed a firefish died and was stuck to one of the vortech pumps. I witnessed one of the sally's pull it off and have a feast.

About a week ago a hermit crab was looking over a shell that a smaller hermit crab was in, before you know it the smaller crab was kicked out and shell-less. Within a few seconds one of the sally's grabbed him up and had a taste of eating him alive.

My sally's are about 4"-5" wide(from the tips of their legs). So their still growing....bigger & bigger, and yes they are extremely fast. My wife and i have noticed every so often a smaller fish is missing with no sign of him, it's like they vanish.

I've seen enough. I have a trap in the tank to get rid of them. They need to go now before i have a real problem on my hands.

Yes they are reef safe. But i'm convinced once they mature their appitite will grow with them, remember they are scavengers.

Just my 2 cents. :fish2:

They are not reef safe at all. They will not only take crabs and snails and small fish but will attack anemones and corals .

Every Sally we've ever had has been a model citizen. Never lost a fish, coral, etc to it. Great scavenger.

They are really neat crabs but not reef safe.

I watched one devour my plate coral. Not sure if he killed a couple of fish which ended up missing but he always tries to swipe at fish when they swim by him. I removed him and sold him back to the LFS. My crab was 6” in diameter and had molted 4 times in my 75.

Thank you Capn Hylinur, i'm happy to be aboard.

I made a trap out of a 2 liter bottle this time, hopefully this one works. I'd rather be crabbing in the bay with a few beers instead though.
