Salt Group Buy: Crystal Sea Marine Mix

I don't test the Ca but the ALK is <9 and PH was 8.0 - 8.1. No brown stuff in the mixing container that what I like this salt.

Hi All,
I just got an email from Reef Plus in Aurora. They are carrying this salt now and have it for $36.50 per 150G box for this weekend. From the pic they sent it looks like they have about 40 boxes.

Everyone sold on this salt? compared to what they use to use? Ill have about 300g total water volume in the house come december so cheap salt means more frags :D
I would just hate to change then have issues.

Was in Reef Plus today, they have a decent amount. Everyone sold on this salt? want to make sure before i grab acouple boxes.... 2 boxes for a 29g should last me quite awhile.

Best stuff out there IMO! I forgot were I read that alot of LFSs use this stuff. IME my corals love it and I haven't had any problems with it.

Ok great I'll grab some - I was bored so I ran in there today ... saw it and left. Came home and remembered this thread... didnt put 2 and 2 together so I'll make another trip out there tomorrow. 2 boxes should have me set till we all find another sale :)

Just picked up 2 cases at $36.50 each ... Looks like Reef Plus still has about 20 cases left if anyone is looking :)

For anyone interested in using this salt in the future I just tested a batch with Salifert kits and came up with these results:

1.025 Heated to 77* Mixing for 24 hours:

  • Calcium - 375ppm (Salifert)
  • Alkalinity - 9.45dKH (Salifert)
  • Magnesium - 1200 (Salifert)

I am using it now and everything seems happy, but I was dosing daily as well.

Edit: It looks like this salt was also added to the Synthetic Salt List in the chemistry forum.

how much do you need?...I'll have to look but I may have an extra 150gal box

One box would be great. Otherwise I just got connected with a distributor who is interested in doing a group buy at just under $32/box. Let me know though!

Not to butt in, but feel I need to do my civic duty.

There are literally hundreds of people who experienced mass bleaching and tank crashes when this salt for a period became wildly popular due to an article by former RC forum moderator/staff person with a doctorate degree. Ahem.

Hundreds of crashes. Leading to many asserting they would not use this salt if given to them free of charge.

Do your research, is all I am saying.

+1

I've seen a few crashes but nowhere near hundreds (link?). Let's be honest though, when you change ANYTHING in your tank with respect to chemicals a crash is possible. All I know is that none of my tanks have ever crashed, ever experienced a mass coral die off, ever looked better than they did on this salt, and ever required less maintenance than they did when I was using this salt. I'll continue to use it until the day it is no longer available. In any case, group buy is looking like a no go. Have about 1/3 of the pallet sold but the 76 case order is unlikely. I'm going to try and bring a few cases in for myself if anyone else is interested.
