Salt Water Mixing Stations Let's See Them

very basic but for now it'll have to do.

Thats a **** ton of salt mate. Where did you get that?

I see we use a similiar measure for the salt, but mines a glass cup with graduations on the side.

Im thinking ill be buying the 150 buckets of salt, the measuring the weight of salt needed to make up 15 gallons at a time and then making "batches" of salt that i can just dump in. Using fish bags to keep the salt fresh...then its just a matter of moving 15 gallons into my mix tank, dumping salt and turning on the pump and heater.

What i really need to do is buy a big *** pump and 50' of 1" tube so i dont have to haul water upstairs in 5 gallon buckets....one day.

Would a couple powerheads in a container this size (25-50g) mix the salt enough? I envision my station being more of just a storage / mixing station. No ATO or anything as it will be pretty much on the other side of the world from my tank -- will still have to carry buckets.

I'm picturing (2) elevated 25 gallon drums plumbed together with a ball valve /check valve inline (to let RO water into a designated SW mixing tank and not vice versa). Then just have a drain line on each to fill buckets with.

Wow, nice setups. I'd post mine, but a trashcan with a powerhead in it hardly constitutes a mixing station. Hopefully I'll get around to setting up one soon.

Some very nice setups here. Way out of my league.

I have a question to you pros - do you ever have a problem w/ your water becoming slimy? I run my RO/DI water into a bucket w/ a float switch that sits in the basement laundry sink (double protection from overflows - I'm prone to them). I then take this RO/DI water and dump it into another bucket w/ a power head & heater to mix saltwater. If I let this sit for any length of time it tends to get slimy and gross and I have to re-do it.

When I'm doing large water changes - I do the above scenario a few times into a 20 gallon aquarium w/ a power head and heater and run into the same slimy issue from time to time. I generally have to wipe out the bucket / tank every other week or so. I've tested the RO/DI and it is reading zero.

Is there something I'm missing? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
GV

I sent a few people with their setups on here a PM, but then I realized I should just ask everyone. I was wondering if I get a few plastic containers without the holes in them to run pipe from them, how do you do that? I seen the uniseals but how does the pipe attach to it? Does it just push in or screw in? I have no experience with plumbing and Im going to be building a mixing station so this is my first time getting my feet wet.

I use the brute garbage cans as an ro holding tank and another one to mix the salt and then I use a 1/3 hp sump pump and a its connected to an rv hose that goes right in to my fish room it makes water changes so easy and using the ro water to fill the top off tank

Are the brute trash cans that much better to use then other trash cans? They seemed a lot stronger is there another reason to use them? Leaching?

is everyone paying these crazy freight prices on shipping for the roto mold containers. i really wanted the 18x30 25g tanks, or even the 40's but jeez the prices are just so crazy.

They range from 60-80 each for the container and cost about 100, 120, 180 to ship!

Us Plastics has the cheapest shipping, but charge the most for the container, and i read no someones post they they ended up charging much more then the estimated shipping prices after the purchase was made, he didnt feel the need to elaborate on the subject, i feel he should have

Buy two and get free shipping. Shipping takes a while, but will save you some cheddar. This is where I got mine.

Shipping is outrageous.... I drive for UPS Freight and pick a lot of these up and in the shipping business it's not always about weight, but space the units take up and shipping classification.... It doesn't make sense though on the charges!!!

its to bad that i can't find these locally at a reasonable price. from Tractor Supply its a $100 for a 30 gallon storage tank.

idono if they doing free shipping anymore.. did you have to call? the only option im getting is freight shipping.

Found a place by me that makes the same spec tank, hopefully i get lucky and they are well priced, they are made about 15min from my office, just waiting on a call back

If i use an eheim 1260/62 as mixing pump, am i going to crush the life span of this pump plumbed externally mixing salt? Im between the 1260 and 1262 for my tank, so figured id get both since i need a tank pump and a mixing pump/pump to run water from the garage to the tank for waterchanges..

i feel like pieces of salt are going to be getting sucked into the pump when plumbed externally and damage the impeller.. maybe a strainer is in order or just a powerhead to mix the salt, not the actual pump??

Finally finished my today.

Well that sucks. That's the only reason I ordered from them. It was back in May though. The local place I checked wanted $100 for a comparable tank as well. Plus you had to buy a bulkhead still. Bummer.

I have everything figured out except I don't know how to wire up a solenoid to a float valve in order to automate my rodi unit. Can anyone help.

Here's mine! I have a multi level set-up so the RODI tank is automatic. Turns the main water source to the RODI unit on when low and off when high.
