Saltwater guppies

I'm visiting family over the holidays and my grandfather has a tank with literally hundreds of beautiful fancy guppies... I may take a few and throw them in my sump and see what happens.

Interesting topic, never heard of this. Im following.

Marvin- are the fry nutritionally benefitial, and if so to what??, fish, corals, etc??

I live in lake worth if anybody wants to travel north. But I literally have a ton guppies/ guppy fry in a tank ready for food if anybody wants them. I got mollies too.

About a month ago, I decided to move my 20 g tank and wanted to get rid of some of the fry. So i FREE craigslist them and ended up catching close to 60 guppy fry and a few parents. They are probably poop now.

But yeah, if you guys want them PM me and i'll give them to you.. They just keep coming no matter how much i try to kill them.

Well put them in the tank, lets see how they do

Fancy Guppies originate from fresh water streams. They are salt tolerant, but not really a brackish water fish. Mollies, on the other hand, are brackish and at home in either hard fresh water or full salt water. IMO I'd go with the mollies. I've also seen some nice ones in the upper fringes of the mangroves. Might have to catch myself some now....you guys are bad influence :D

yeah, i read that some guppies are fine but the fancy are the hardest to acclimate weeks vs hours with mollies. I herd the feeder guppies have a better chance. And if you like the look, the columbian shark is pretty cool, i had a pair in my 55 when that was running. Ah well, if these don't make it i will have to try mollies as my mother herd me talking about this and wants mollies, and it is her living room my tank is in lol.

Can fancy guppies tolerate the salt?
wasnt sure so i figured id ask before getting some lol

by hours i meant like 12 or so, which if they are usually in brackish areas id assume would be ok. still trying to find someone online with much success with any guppies, most seem to tolerate but nobody shows them lasting long.

i edited doreo didnt want anyone to take it personal cause i didnt mean it for anyone here, i was referring to other post on this forum and other forums of people saying they acclimated theyre mollies in an hour or less

Watch out for those Colombian "Shark" Catfish. They get up around 12" or so, ugly, and predatory with large mouths.

No offence taken, i too seen people just thow a bunch in and hope some survive. To harsh for me. Im to forgetful to do a short acclimation anyways lol.

for bill i agree they are deff not something id put in a smaller tank or with smaller fish, but they are a good alternative to a real shark.

And why put mollies/guppies in a salt tank? well like above, algea control, free food and it looks cool and is fun to puzzle people when they see a "fresh" fish in the tank with coral :)

I once had an assistant at LFS I was a manager at confuse one with an nurse shark. It's my day off, he's in charge, calls me up to tell me about this great trade he made with a customer for a shark. It was a large Colombian Catfish :eek2: I had to acclimate it back to FW to find a home for it.

i was once told that they do better in salt as they grow. i had a nice pair when i first started in my 55, then i downgraded to a 10 so i got rid of them and they went to a nice fowlr home. Id put another in the tank but i love gobies and they would easy fit in mouth after a few months :(

Would it be a good Idea to start a new tank with mollies or guppies? I'm hopefully starting my tank this weekend.

Bill,

If you do keep me in mind :) Also let me know if you get any Killifish or Gambusia :)

Just set a minnow trap. That's what I used to do when I interned at the UM Fish Hatchery.
