Sand questions

Have a couple of questions about sand. Hope you can help with answering and providing your opinion.

  • Can you use (packaged) dry sand and then add live sand over it when starting a new tank set up? Is it safe, or should one just buy enough live sand to fulfill the sand bed requirement?
  • What is the best brand for larger grains of sand? (CaribSea Special Grade Reef Sand?)

Yes to the first question. Caribsea Special Grade is what I use...although I have no idea if it is the best brand.

You can buy Special Grade dry as well. I used some dry then added wet on top without any issues.

Great to know! Didn't know it came dry. Did you have to rinse or anything? Where did you buy your sand? Btw D-Nak I got some frags from you years back. Hope you're doing well.

I rinsed the dry sand to get rid of the dust, but if it's a new set up and you're putting wet sand on top of it, you probably don't even need to rinse it. I buy my sand from Aquatic Collection. They're actually cheap compared to online pricing -- I think many of the online stores factor shipping costs into the actual price of the sand. Then they can still offer cheap shipping.

I remember you coming by -- glad you're still in the game. My focus has shifted to anemone and clowns. I'll go back to coral one of these days. :lolspin:
