Sand Recommendation

Crushed coral. Don't worry if it's not the best looking thing. People check out your corals and fish and your tank has plenty of both. I have seen your tank a half dozen times and never noticed what sand you have. But turning those 60's all the way up will be great for your sps and fish

Not if you want wrasses

The real issue should not be what the DT looks like in this case but more of how his system will function as a result. If your going to have lots of flow then no, a small grain size would blow and gather. A large grain presents problems of its own. If you plan on keeping your DT sand bed to 1" or 2" at best then it's ok to have a larger grain size. Remember, the larger size grain the easier it will be for excess food and waste to migrate into it. if you make it any deeper with a large size grain your setting yourself up for some real nutrient related problems down the road.
Either do that or go BB via water changes and setup a RDSB. Then again, with a RDSB you must do your HW too in order to get it done correctly. Read this:

It's cheap and will help you get a better understanding on what actually goes on in a Sand Bed. Hope it helps.

Your tank is only 150 gallons bigger. Lol I think if your tank was stuffed with sps you would need 4 of the 60s. Lol

Jonny are you sure your thinking of the same systems your comparing......Not sure you fully understand my setup it has over 7000gph flow without the 2 60s ......flow I do not lack lol and your a little off on the 150 more ...lol just a pinch...that would make Mike's dt a 400 his dt is no where near a 400 that it would need to be in order to be 150 off.....

Either way back to my original post....crushed coral would be a horrible choice for certain fish species if they are an intended species to be housed there

It's true some species will not do well.

That's right yours is around 550 gallons. With all your pumps your getting around 37x turn over mike with his is getting about 47x turnover. It probably helps you a lot tank being so tall.
After seeing Rogers tank I would like to see him chime in . His tank was incredible and he had countless tunzes

Are you refereeing circulation rates ..... I think your off on turnover for both ....circulation possibly but turnover is defined by the amount flowing threw the entire system one complete revolution exiting the display and threw the filtration and back again compared to the entire volume minus a plus or minus factor for a percent of the water exiting the dt and bypassing the filtration completely and just returning to the dt .....and this would be different in each system ......in my system it was put together with around a 10 x turnover rate ..a good rule of thumb would be to shoot between 6-10 x turnover

Total system return gallons / Total system gph .....7000/700.....

I have fairly fine sand and it moves around with 2 mp40s on a 60" aquarium. I hate the look of the coarse sand so I am eager to see what works for you in the end Mike.
