Schooling Chalk Bass

Can you have a school of five or more Chalk bass, without them picking each other off?

Has anyone seen or had a school of Chalk Bass?

There is a thread on MOFIB about this (http://www.marinebreeder.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=219&t=1276), most people who have treid say they just get down to 2 even though they are simultaneous hermaphrodites. I would like to see someone do it in a really big tank to see how it works out.

Here is my pair:

Not sure what "really big" is to you, but we have a small group in our 10 000 g caribbean reef tank, and they do fine. No aggression and courtship on a very regular basis, but no spawning (yet) that I've seen.

I put a large group in a 3500 tank and they all got along fine - very personable and underrated fish IMO - also bulletproof!

I talked to my LFS owner today about it and she says she knows people keeping schools of chalk bass. I asked about just keeping two, but she says either one or five.

I can't decide, I don't want to keep one alone.:( They seem like really friendly, social fish.

I kept 2 in a 210 for a few years before I removed them. They stayed pretty much together for the most part and I dont recall any aggression between them.

I had two in a 10g qt before I moved them to my 65. They just did the basic who's in charge dance and then everything was fine. However when I put them in the dt I think my flasher chased one too much and it ended up on the ground :( The other one is now out and about and doing very well. Shouldnt see why two couldn't be fine in a 210

Two would get along just fine, especialy if added at the same time. I added a smaller one almost a year after the first one and there was very little aggression for the first day, after that there was nothing.

I'm hoping on keeping a group in my 360. I will likely start with 3 - 5 and see what happens, unless people have strong evidence otherwise - other than what people have mentioned in this thread, I didn't really see any evidence of aggression through searching here and on google.

jd474,

I think your tank at 10,000 gallons would qualify as "BIG". :eek2:

A picture of your tank would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of a Caribbean Biotype setup and would love to see yours.

Cheers,
Bruce
