Scott's 270 aka Project Mayhem

IMO I'd be concerned about the flat worms for sure, look at some pictures on here to confirm and start dipping and searching and removing eggs if you can find them. I've had them become a plague and wipe out SPS.

Tank and room looks great. Do you have any small holes below the water line on any of the lines back to the sump to break a back siphon in case of power failure?

Hey Dave,

I have been talking with my LFS and he said not to worry about the type I have. They aren't the coral eating type :) There are GF check valves on the lower sump return pump and the top system drains to the bottom of the weir anyways, which is lower than the return outputs so there is no point adding a siphon break to them. If I have a power failure all the excess water in the system is collected in the lower sump... or at least it will be once the new sump comes in.

Thanks. What's with all the Albertans finding my thread lately :)

Personally I just noticed the thread - can't speak for any others.
Do the flatworms on the glass have a 'split or forked" tail or back end? If they are what I am thinking, they are relatively harmless until they over run the tank (they can be fast spreading). They are hard to kill because they actually host a symbiotic algae, so in essence they are photosynthetic. That said if you have some tangs that will munch on the algae growing on the glass they will actually eat them as incidentals with the algae.
I do highly recommend dipping your corals no matter where you get them from because if you end up with AEFW they are a whole other "BIG" problem.
Good luck.

They definitely have a forked tail. I dip all corals and inspect/pick at with tweezers before adding them to the tank. Thank you for the advice though!

I will be picking a new lower sump up from Denny the end of this month. I am looking for some stag horn frags or small colonies. Know of any/anyone?

Anyone have ideas as to why the centre portion of my sunset montipora would be dying off? The growth edge looks nice and bright with polyp extension. The flesh just started to slowly lose colour, almost turning greyish (not bleaching), then the polyps started to retreat and now the original frag is pretty much toast but the new growth edges are doing fine?

Any suggestions?

I mentioned I have weird recession on my Sunset Monti, well here it is. Any guesses as to what's causing it?

Looks really good, nice job and thank for the updates.

How do you like the MP40's mounted on the back wall of your tank like that?
I'm thinking I may do similar with a couple of MP60's I just bought. Kinda scared I might blow the front panel off:)

My MP40's are only running at about 40-50% Only in NTM mode do they pulse up to max 85%. Any more than that and it's just a sandstorm in there! You might find MP60's would go to waste along the short side of the tank. Unless your 300g is 5 feet deep that is :) I find it a bit difficult to find a happy medium between the LPS and SPS needs, but I think it's worked out for now until there is some substantial SPS growth.

Absolutely love your pictures, fantastic in every way. Not sure why the sunset Monti is receding but I had a small alk swing that turned mine from red to pink but after 2 20 gallon water changes its back to full red. Have you tried brushing the green algae off the receded area?

Thanks everyone! I will be refining my photography rig so that I can use my tripod above the tank and get some real keeper photos hopefully! Also, I am working on getting my hands on a load of RR spa corals in the future. A Tyree Bazooka Joe is still evading me. It's darn hard to find here. If anyone has some or know's of someone that does and would be willing to sell a frag please let me know!

I did two separate siphon jobs on the tank to lower the flatworm population prior to dosing the tank with flatworm exit. I then dosed the FWE, turned the MP40's to a strong pulse mode and it took about 20 minutes until I could see the flatworms in distress. Once they were filling up the water column I cranked on the carbon reactor and then started netting out the floating flatworms with the largest fine mesh net I had. waited until the water was mostly clear and then did a 10% water change. All in all, three full days later the tank looks great! No negative side effects whatsoever. I'd recommend flatworm exit to anyone.
