Scott's 270 aka Project Mayhem

My two female rhomboid wrasse's showed up at the LFS today! My male is going to have a great valentine's day!

I had the chance to buy a femininus wrasse as well but just couldn't pull the trigger. Oil is too low right now lol!

Nice - I would love to get a pair as well.

I am excited to get home and see them! Also, my LFS surprised me again and got their hands on a Bodianus opercularis I was asking for :) He's about 4" long and doing well I am told.

I'm a little nervous as I run my system around 78F. A good portion of the documentation/husbandry I have been reading for these fish suggests they are happier around 75F. How low can I go with my corals and still keep them healthy & happy?

every year i let my tank drop to around 74-75 degrees during the winter months, I just let the temp drop by itself and set my heater to kick on at 74. i have seen no ill effects for the past two years and still see growth, acclimation is the key.

B. opercularis is in the tank and eating like a pig :) The long-nosed Hawkfish is being a little bit of a jerk to him but nothing out of hand. Also, I witnessed my rhomboid flashing for the first time! Now that the two females are in the tank the supermale was seeing his reflection and flipping between a gold yellow and bright blue. I love Golden Rhomboids!

Also, my LFS just ordered a Claire's Wrasse... unreal! I'm not getting it, but I hope to see it before the proud new owner picks it up.

I stopped dosing Coral Snow. My corals were getting a little bleached at a half dose and the water didn't look any cleaner than before. I hope things will return to normal over the next couple weeks. The SPS weren't effected too much and have been growing well.

I have a poor video of the peppermint I will attach if I can figure it out. I guess just click on the picture and it takes you to the video :)

I have kept a b. Opercularis for almost a year in 77-78 temps with summer swings up to 81 . He is a healthy pig of a fish!

When I click on it, a video player loads up in a new screen. Sorry I don't know what to do for others.

Acesq, thanks for the info and reassurance on temp.

I added 3 ventralis anthias, a male and two females. They are super shy and stay in the rocks so far but come out to eat. So here's hoping over the next week or so they build up some courage or trust with their tankmates!

So spent a bit of time analyzing the PAR values/spread from a couple different light fixtures at Bayside (Thanks Colby for letting me in there!) and there were some neat results.

All lights are mounted ~24" off the water surface.

AI Sols (4 fixtures) Sorry I didn't take a lot of data points for this tank.

T5's (3 x 6 bulb fixtures mounted along the short axis - fixture on the right with a couple month old bulbs, other 2 fixtures almost a year old)

Data gap in the middle from centre overflow :)

My observations:

Smaller frag tank
620 PAR at water surface
PAR levels at coral level concentrated under lights with poor diffusion anywhere other than under the lights.

360G
You can see where the centre overflow is on the 1” and 4” PAR graphs
Not much of a drop in PAR between fixtures, meaning good light diffusion from the T5’s (and reflectors)
You can see a little higher PAR values from the centre and right fixtures
light was predominately aligned along the length of the fixtures

270G
The light was surprisingly linear along the length of the tank, with the highest PAR values actually concentrated between the two fixtures, not directly underneath them
Concentrate corals with higher PAR requirements along the central third of the tank

Just thought it was interesting :)

Good luck with the Ventralis. I had a trio until Friday when my male was killed. [emoji25] They are my favorite fish and after a bit of acclimation do well even with angels and tangs. Mine like to hang under my arch, but spend a fair amount of time above the rock structure. It's good to hear that yours are eating. What did you start them on?

OVA eggs and they are eating small brine and select small PE mysis. Not really taking the small pellets yet.

What killed your male?! I have been keeping my eye on the royal gramma. Cheapest fish in the tank will end up being the bully.... I just know it.

I have narrowed it down to either a lucky emerald crab (I have two small ones) or my Bodianus opercularis. I hope it's not the hogfish, but he is my only fish capable of ripping an entire tail off.

I'm really hoping it was the emerald. Sucks either way but getting rid of your peppermint would be a tragedy.

And I am still having a tough time getting pics of the RR UOP but it's getting better.
