seachem matrix better than black diamonds

hello all

quick Q :)

is seachem matric GAC better than BD ?

I dont like this BD !, it finishes too fast in my tank and I THINK raises my po4 ! I remember there was a thread here regarding it but cant find it now :S

I can get seachem matrix now, are those any better ?

Seachem matrix is great. I love the form factor for reactors (spherical). It's just costly, so I use BRS stuff.

nice sounds good :) thanks alot.

so I can use it in a reactor right ?

I just hate having to change the carbon every 2 weeks :S hoping it can go for a month at least

I had used seachem for years and had good results, but I whent to BRS for cost. Yes it is better.

IMO/IME Matrix performs better than BD but ROX trumps both:)

ditto. Matrix is very good may even be close to the gold standard rox8 per Boomer but matrix is also more expensive than even rox8 from BRS.Rox works great for me.

In order.....

Best
1. ROX, Extruded peat .8 mm. Looks like broken mechanical penicl lead, HCL acid washed
2. TLF Hydrocarbon or BRS Lignite, HCl acid washed
3. thefilterguys Bitum for Kidney dialysis, Nitric acid washed, dust free and pH neutral
4. Matrix Spherical Bitum
5. Elos vey small pellet Bitum

Price cost
1. Matrix, crazy price
2. Elos, crazy price
3. ROX, they are almost giving it away. So get ready for a price jack -up
4. Filterguys
5. TLF
6. BRS

others to may to list

Seachem Matrix is not GAC. It is for biological filtration:

http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Matrix.html

"Matrixâ„¢ is a high porosity biomedia that provides efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrixâ„¢ is a porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrixâ„¢ provides as much surface (>~700 m2) as 170 liters of plastic balls! Plastic bio-materials provide only external surface area, whereas Matrixâ„¢ provides both external and internal macroporous surface area. These macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrixâ„¢, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter.

Matrixâ„¢ is completely inert and will not breakdown. It need not be replaced. Since the majority of the bacteria are internal, Matrixâ„¢ may be rinsed when needed without damaging the filter. Matrixâ„¢ is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters."

no I meant the carbon, not the nitrate sponge.

thanks all :) just got a seachem matrix,

Boomer, should I still rinse it in RO/DI and boiling water and stuff ?

from the replies it seems like its not THAT much better than BD :S aahhh

I guess I will have to pay for the shipping of ROX to Canada, lol what site can I buy it from ? BRS ?

Yes, it is GAC :)

Just rinse any GAC in tap water or if you want RO/DI

thank you boomer :)

I like how they admit to GAC having po4 unlike others who advertise saying it has no po4 :S lol

I will give it a shot tonight, 250 ml is what I will start with in a phos reactor.
250 ml of BD goes bad after about 2 weeks. lets see if these guys can last longer

All GAC has some PO4 but the amount in any of it is about meaningless for almost all those we use. If you have 50 gal of water and used 1/2 cup, which is a good guide line, you will not see the test kit move or ~ 0.5 ml/cc GAC/l. Acid washed GAC is very clean as it is acid washed :) Matrix is not acid washed.
