Second Annual Classroom Reef Open House!

Fragswapper is set up!

Fragswapper is set up!

Good news!

The event is set up on http://fragswapper.com under the Finger Lakes Reef Club organization. :beachbum:

Please let me know if you have any questions. (Still looking for ideas for educational/demonstration topics as well!)

It seems like there are two groups of people on this forum. The newer ones that don't understand the basic chemistry and testing. Why live rock is important, what are pods etc. the basics. Then there are the more advanced that are interested in cool lighting etc. Maybe two different demonstration groups to appeal to the diversity of the forum people. I know alot of us are visual learners and could learn alot more watching than reading.

Things are shaping up...

Things are shaping up...

Folks are putting up wishlists and I've got some listings up on Fragswapper.com. Be sure to check it out!

It looks like there's going to be an eclectic group of folks attending: people who have never given reefkeeping a second thought, to middle school kids, to community members bringing their small children to see the "fishies", to some cagey reefing veterans; the whole gamut.

I'm thinking that I'll have an agenda posted on an easel for the educational/demonstration aspects. With all of the non-reefkeepers in attendance, I would be remiss if I didn't do a basic introduction to reefkeeping talk: giving folks the basics and pointing them in the right direction re. research, etc. I also thought I'd do an intermediate type of talk on the different ways to supplement and maintain calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium in a reef aquarium. This seems to be a confusing topic for some people, so I thought I would try to shed a little light.

Again, I welcome any volunteers who want to help out with a talk or demo.

Kat: I'd love to have you paint one of your reef sculptures. I'll be PM'ing you in the next couple of days to see what you need.

I'm getting pretty stoked, as this event seems like it's going to be much bigger than last year's, and I love having visitors!:wavehand:

Hi Scott,
That sounds really super.
Not to mention... right down the street.
I think you will be fine... so long as you dont say its ok to put a tang in a small tank...;)

BTW... let me know if you want me to bring over some of the labidochromis.
-Greg

Thanks, Greg!

Actually, I'm waiting for a bit of the snow to melt so I can get some rocks for aquascaping the cichlid aquarium, so I won't be ready for the labs yet.

Right now, it's just an empty 55g behind my desk!

I keep thinking it might be good to do a short talk on my experience as someone very new to saltwater. A bit about the research, but more about being patient through the tank's "growing pains" - cycling, the algaes, cyano, dino, etc. I'm just not sure the best way to organize it, do I have pics to go along with it, and, most important - would something like this be a good idea??

What do you think?

i think that's a pretty good idea...a lot of people come into this hobby and think that it's like throwing a goldfish in a bowl.....

lcs-

That sounds great. It sounds like it would be an awesome "right from the horse's mouth" follow-up to my introductory presentation.

If you want to bring pics or a Powerpoint on a jump drive or CD, I'll have my computer hooked up to the ceiling-mounted projector. I'll be using it for my presentation(s).

I'm also planning on giving a "tour" of the system, highlighting the water mixing station, filtration, water flow, lighting, and maintenance routines.

Glad you got it setup Scott. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I'll try to take a ride out to this event.

I've been thinking about what I might say re: my newbie experience and I was wondering how long you would like it to be? I was figuring 10 minutes or so and then leave a few minutes for questions?

Thanks, Kat!

you are very welcome, Scott. And you won't need to provide anything for me for the day....just a space somewhere about 4ft square...a stool would be great, but not necessary. I'll bring the easel and all the other supplies. If you would like, I will gladly donate the painting for a raffle with the funds going to your continued funding of this project.:fish1:

Is it possible to get this "thumb tacked" so it doesn't keep disappearing on the second page? Kind of like the Buffalo event.
