September Meeting Sat the 2nd

HOLY CRAP! Maybe 9mi isn't enough?? I tested the water and all parameters are good, but I did notice an accumulation of algae on the bottom of each bucket.

You should be ok with the temp coming down. You don't want swings Up,and down,Up,and down. I go out that far for two reasons ,one to get away from fresh water discharge ,from the river, and two ,to get away from other pollutants. Ted

The problem is, I can't check the water for pollutants, as far as salinity, PO4, Calcium, Mag, Alk, Amm, Nitrite, and Nitrate everything is in order. I've never collected water from this close before, I guess I'm just a little reluctant to use it. What do you think?

Unless there is a red tide , I think you will be ok. Some times I only go out ten to twelve miles. In the summer the warm water close to shore seems to have more algae suspended in it. Ted

Thanks Ted, the water looks and smells fine. If there was a red tide outbreak you would really smell it in the water. I noticed that all the algae basically settled to the bottom, so I'm just going to siphon out the top 90% and use that. I couldn't belive the salinity level though, it was almost at 1.027. Now I know that this is perfectly fine in the realm of natural sea water, but normally it runs about 1.204-5 all the times I have tested it. I thought It was my refractometer needing to be calibrated, but I re-calibrated it with distilled water and it was right on the money again. What has been your experience with NSW up by you, as far as salinity?

Ian ,It's been running at 1.025 ,but I did get some that was 1.026. I get it just before high tide,on an incoming tide. The first time I was too close to shore ,and it was 1.024. The river water goes out quite a ways ,and stays close to the surface. I drop my pump down about 6 feet, about 12 to 14 miles out. Ted

I did the same thing about 9-10 miles out. My pump goes about 4.5-5 feet down. Well the water is in the tank, and everything is still alive, haha. Looks good!

Ian, how much water do you bring back with you ? I come back with 80 gal. , for my tank ,and 15 gal. for Paul's tank . Ted

My boat is only 21 ' ,but I have a fair amount of room. I use a mag drive pump to pump from the boat to my sump room. I drain the water from my sump ,and pump in the new water. Ted

I have some 50 gal food grade barrels. I think I paid $10. each for them. They smell like peppers, but I washed them out real well ,and they work fine.

Ian I think we hijacked this thread . We need to start a new thread ,or go over to the Reef Discussion Forum. There is a NSW thread over there , that I already responded to. Ted

Anyone have any extra styrofoam boxes like you get from the fish store? We're going to be making live rock in class and I need them if you have them sitting around.
