serial to wireless ethernet adapter

ok i've been wanting to hook up my ACII to my computer but i would need 50+ft of cable and can't hid all of it. been brainstorming on how to do this and guess this is an option. i was going to upgrade to the ACIII and connect w/ a game port but this could save me a TON!

is this the right router? i guess i can stop into the store.

i just skimmed this thread but i'm confused on where i can find that searial adapter that has the pins on it for plugging into the router.

gotta jet hope to read and learn more later
thanks

LB: That is one end of the system that you connect to your PC with Aquanotes on it. That can be a CAT cable or wireless. At the AC III you need a bridge. Neptune recommends a wireless bridge but I found that the gaming adapter Linksys WGA54G works just as well out-of-the-box for about half the cost. I have used both with identical results.

so that isnj't the right router to hack up and use at the AC end??? install the serial end on??

you can use just a wireless game port on a ACII??? need a serial to ethernet adapter though??

I am really not sure about the ACII and what its capabilities and connections are. It sounded like you were going to upgrade to an ACIII Pro, which is what I have. I got confused your post but now realize what the thread title is...sorry about that. My bad! :(

It could be if it is not a rev 5. The one you need is a WRT54G v4 or WRT54GL. Check this thread to find out the revision from the serial number.

This is what you need to connect your ACII wirelessly if you already have a wireless infrastructure. If you do not have a wireless network, you'll need 2 of those.

jnarowe - no problem...i was confused from you post too

laurentm - i have a wireless Linksys BEFWIIS4 Wireless B Broadband router...that should work correct??

i'll have to check radioshack and see if they are in the stores and have the G version. otherwise how would i tell from the website?? i guess they could be the GL or the G...would have to call them to be sure...then it still is a guessing game

The GL should be labeled WRT54GL and costs about $10 more. Try this link.

Can you set a WPA or WEP on the main router and still allow the Bridge to connect? It seems if I apply security the bridge will not connect. I mirror the security settings on the bridge, but I think those settings are for it's broadcast.
Any input?

I'm using WEP128 on mine and everything seems to be fine.

hmm...still debating if i should just upgrade to a ACIII or get the router and mess w/ it and try my luck at being non-programing/net savey

Really there is no programming involved. Just minor soldering then make the settings on your router. The biggest PITA for me was figuring out where to solder things since I used a WRT54G and the board is competely different than the GL

So you just set "Wireless Security" with the same settings on both routers? (As there is no client configuration for the bridge)

Hmm.. I just fell off this thread I guess. Forgot that this was out there. I have an offer from someone in this thread that is getting rid of their router so that might be an option! Just will need some help getting it all set up to work w/ my wireless router when I get it

I bought someones used router that was set up and running like this thead showed.

I'll have to reread everything to figure out what settings to change

I'm sure I'll have questions
