Setting up a 180

Tank update:

I have been having a unique problem since I put a lower
wattage light over the refugium. My calcium level dropped
from 400+ to 350 and my alk rose from 3.5 to 4+ meq/l.
Even with calcium reactor running great. So I did a water
change and had to add calcium to get it back up.

While this went on I was still treating the tank for ICH,
with skimmer turned down.

I had a brown diatom bloom and a calcium like build up...

My PBT has stopped eating and is covered even more
than anytime before in ich, all other fish look to be ich free.
I added a skunk cleaner to help with cleaning but is still
a little shy to be much good.

I setup a 20g tank with hypo salinity of 1.013 and if I can
ever catch PBT he is going in and is going to be treated
with kordons RID-ICH.

I purchased a more powerful light for the fuge and placed
some carbon in the sump. It probably reduced the
effectiveness of Ruby reef kick-ick but I felt like I must.

I am confused how PBT is covered but all of the other fish
Have looked clean for the last 2 weeks.

I love your PBT I hope he gets better! :( Sorry to hear about the other problems too. Sounds odd that would drop the calcium so much? I wonder if the ich medicine contributed to that?

Yea! New photos!

Hello NanoGurl, I will take more picks once I get PBT into the Hospital
tank. He may be feeling sick but he is still fast!

I'm sorry for your set backs get the pb into qt. And hopefully that will solve all probs hopefully

Thanks MrSaltLife, he is still showing a full belly and has stopped eating only since Saturday morning so he is still full of energy.

I may have to remove some of the live rock to get him, but he is fast.

 goodluck! I had to tear apart our 75 to get a lemon peel out!

Wow that was easy! I had the net sitting in the tank for an hour, PBT was in a corner and I just moved the net close to him and waited. He came over to investigate and I swooshed him up.

Thanks MrSaltLife and NanoGurl. I love PBT too NG but he is not happy with me and is not very happy in his temporary living quarters...

I added a hydor Koralia 4 today for more circulation, it says 1200gph and it sure looks like it :)

Turnover....hmmm, I hope the return pump is close to 1000gph (reduced from 1190 due to head hight and restriction) and 1200 from the hydor would give me 2200gph total.
But I am not sure how to calculate that to turnover. Is turnover considered just from the return or of all pumps providing circulation?

It really depends on who you ask, but I think most people don't include the return as turnover.. since a lot of returns are not that high.. but yours might be depending on your sump setup.

If you have 2200gph divide that by 180. That gives you about 12x turnover. The more flow the better... it would help with your algae issues and your corals if you get a lot of SPS espepcially.

My 75 has 31x turnover without the return. With the return it has 36x turnover.

Thanks NanoGurl, I was going to get 2 850gph (1700 total) hydor's but thought that might be to much.

For me to get 30x I would need 5400gph needing 5 1200gph hydor's or 2 Vortech's at full flow.

I would love to get 2 vortech's but not at $344 a piece, I would be willing to pay 344 for 2 though.

My return pump is limited by the rate of the over flow (approx. 600gph x 2) so 1200gph is about the best I can get from the return.

Thanks alot NG! Now I am starting to stress out about my limited flow:eek2:

My wife has cut me off any further spending on anything remotely related to fish:mad: until further notice that is.

Once I get the ich under control we will replace the lost clown and Royal Gramma....and maybe a sixline wrasse;)

I agree I need more flow, but after buying the chiller, my wife has just had enough of my reef related spending habits:mad:

I am not sold on the the tunze pumps nor their high prices but those vortech's sure are nice. The hydor I have has a very gentle but high flow and made a big difference compared to the flow I had before.

I know you are right about the benefits of higher flow, but it will have to wait until more funds are supplied to the reef budget (via Wifey's approval)

Only suggested the Tunze bc you mentioned a price that was too expensive and that tunze was in the price range and provided the flow. I don't know anything about the hydors.

Keep us updated on the PBT!

I have a hydor and its ok for the price. 2 of them would be a good start or even to maxijets, and they aren't too expensive.

I know the tunze's are expensive but they are worth the price IMO. They give a hell of a lot of flow for their size and enery usage. Might be worth the investment and then you have just 1 or 2 powerheads to service and maintain and can get lots of flow.

I would definetly recommend more water flow if possible.
