Setting up a 180

Not sure but here is another theory. A Powder Brown like the Powder Blue can be really aggressive when adding anything new to the tank. By "re-adding" the fish back into the system, the PBT could have thought it was something new being put into his territory and they were battling out their dominance.. which could be why after a few minutes he left him alone. Your PBT will probably do this to anything added to the tank. But it could have been your fish trying to get away from him.. just something else to consider. That would also explain why you have not seen this behavior before.. since you haven't added anything into his territory before?

I am glad he is okay though! We had a clown fish that would constantly jump into the MegaFlow box. It was our game. Every day he would jump in and when I noticed I would shut down the pumps and fish him out (no pun intended!).

Yea, you can feed your plate every week if you want. We feed ours for sure. You will see it swell and inflate and even move it does a lot of neat stuff. Very cool corals =)

Thank you NanoGurl, Blenny used to be top fish in the 46 and now has been put in his place and maybe felt a little insecure. Now he seems to be fine and is back to his normal self.

Very interesting behavior of your clown....maybe it was looking for attention?

LoL maybe! Idk... he was a really weird fish. Gald to hear yours is settled in :)

It's been awhile but I am back,

Updates: First the bad news.

One acro frag has bleached out entirely in less than 2 days but all others are fine.

Problem that caused this? Tank temp swung from morning temp of 79.4 to 83.6 by the time I got home at 4:30, cause: my wife turned off the fan that was was being used to cool the sump. This happened the day before the bleaching started.

Our Royal gramma made a trip in the overflow down into the sump, it then jumped into the refuge with sharp rocks and got a bit scratched up. This happened about 5 days ago and was in rough shape, yesterday afternoon was the last time we saw it swimming around and I have looked everywhere but can't find it:(

The plate coral has been getting damaged from 2 hermits walking all over it, I tried moving it but the hermits are relentless and persistent  I would like to remove them but I have no where to put them.

The tangs have developed ick, with the PBT getting it the worst. I have been feeding all fish with fresh finely chopped garlic and rubbing dry seaweed with a freshly cut piece of garlic. This has not helped much so I ordered some Ruby Reef Kick-Ich to help eliminate the problem, I hope it helps.

The blue tang has been getting cleaned by the Fire shrimp but PBT can not sit still long enough to get sufficiently cleaned.

Now the good news:

I have purchased a new fan that operates when the halides turn on and turns off 15 minutes after the actinic's turn off. Keeping the tank temp within 1 - 1.5 degrees above 79 heater set temp.

The fire shrimp is out in the open and cleaning several of the fish, "Very Cool"!

All fish are eating like pigs, with the 2 tangs being the biggest pigs:lol: Which is good thing, keeping their strength up to help fight the ick infestation.

I also ordered joes juice to try and control the aiptasia problem that is getting out of control (so much for the use of peppermint shrimp).

We will be going on a week long vacation starting next Saturday but I have a trusted person taking care of our Tanks and cats while we are gone. Worst case I can be back within 4 hours if needed.

I know this has been a boring thread lately but I hope to make it more interesting after the much needed vacation.
Later:)

How are the tangs doing now? Do they still have ich? Sorry to hear about that :(

New fan sounds very cool!

Hope you have a great time on vacation!!! Def jealous! =)

Hi NanoGurl:D The PBT still has some and now my 2 clowns have it, but happily the Blue Hippo Tang has been getting a regular cleaning from the fire shrimp so it looks very clean. The other fish are still clean. I am still waiting for the marine depot order to arrive...I thought it should have been here today but no.

I am in such a need for this vacation...you have no idea! Between work and personal stuff...We are all looking forward to spending family time in upper Michigan, check out the link.

On a sadder note,
My plate coral is all but finished, I tried to give it a chance by giving it a 10 minute dip in coral disinfectant diluted in tank water...I think it did more harm than good :( It has lost almost all of it's pretty green color and has been turning browner and browner.

If I thought it was going to be fine but getting trampled on by hermits has been to much for it.

I am glad to see your tank coming back to life NG, everything looks to be very healthy again...Very happy for you :)

Wow that looks like a great place to spend some time with the family! I hope you guys have a fun time!

Sorry to hear about your plate :/ Hopefully your fish will fight it off and be okay.

Thanks! Tank is doing okay for now!

I'm sure after these couple bumps in the road, your tank will be well on it's way!! It seems like as soon as one thing starts, and you begin to work on that problem, more pile up!! (Trust me,, been there done that!)
It's a part of reefkeeping!!

Was that the main reason about the plate? the Hermits? Where they trying to pick at food or something? Just curious... I've been wanting a Long Tentacle plate....

Vacationing in the U.P... That's my neck of the woods!! It's nice to get away and get your mind off of things!! Sounds like a relaxing vacation!
The wife and I are definitely due for one soon! The last time we had a good vacation was the Honeymoon!! (well besides frag swaps, and going to Appleton and Green Bay shopping!)

Thanks NanoGurl:)

Hey 2farNorth, The U.P.!!! yeaaaa sweeeeeet!!!! I can't wait!!!

The plate was doing fine and did have some pieces of mysis on it and I noticed a hermit crawl right on top of it and take the mysis. Now mind you I feed everything extremely well but it never truly seems to be enough for the 2 hermits I have.
I noticed several other times how the hermits would just walk over the plate and I tried to gingerly place the plate in a different place twice but the hermits walk everywhere and often.

I think having a long tentacle plate would have deterred the hermits.

I knew that getting Tangs could pose a problem with ick, but I thought it was worth the risk. With all the posts regarding the various types of ick and it's cures will help me deal with this current outbreak.

Reef keeping surely has it's up and downs! Thanks for your encouraging words 2farNorth!

Well now, this tread is pretty boring eh?

I will give an update:

Upon returning from vacation 3 acros were bleached and male clown covered in ich was fading fast. Tank temp was over 84 and ich had become even worse.

My tank watcher did exactly what he was told to do and I was happy with that.

I ordered Kick-ick and gave another treatment. Male clown perished, royal gramma must have as well.

My plate coral started a comeback, but has been bothered by, snails, crabs and a sea cucumber :( It is really trying hard to make it.

Current info:

Remaining corals all look good, BTA'S are growing more tentacles and all fish except Clown and PBT are ich free.

I broke down and purchased a chiller which I installed last night, tank temp has been holding pretty steady at 79 (+/- 1).

I am giving 1 more full treatment of kick-ick to hopefully remove this ich infestation.

As soon as Ich is gone I will replace the clown and royal gramma and start to look for more corals.

I had received some snails from a local reef keeper, you know who you are:) Thanks again, they are all doing great and nothing has been knocked over yet:)

My wife thinks we need more live rock as well...But having to purchase the chiller has tapped the reef budget for now:eek2:

I heard running less of a salinity will also help with ick. Man time away always seams to be the killer. Do you know why your temp raised. have you tested anything else? You can order some Marco rocks and seed them over time. They are fairly priced.

Welcome back!

What kind of chiller did you go with? What are your thoughts on it so far? Was it hard to setup? Never used one before.

Sorry to hear about your fish!

Glad to see your back!! Although... I see you picked up a little of the language.. EH? :D

Vacations are nice, but the first thing I do when I get home is run downstairs and check on the tank! Always seems like something goes on when your gone!!

Think of it this way,, it could've been worse!

The Acros that were bleached, do they look as if they will make it? Just curious

Good to hear about the plate,, well sorta.. hopefully it will make a recovery!

Hey there erics3000, I tried a fresh water dip with the male clown but his health was already in decline, after 15 minutes only some of his ich had fallen off. I am afraid to stress anything else if I don't have to, my fire shrimp has done a very good job of cleaning all fish but female clown and PBT.
My tank temp raised from the outer orbit pro's 3 - 250watt halides and high summer temps.

Marco rocks? I am not sure what those are, I had tried using lava rocks but they really allow hair algae a place to hold on tight.

Marco rocks are decent! Basically dried and cleaned fused Porites (such as 'Pukani' etc.) live rock. I believe their website is marcorocks.com.... I used that as a base in my 120.. very nice shapes,, that and 50# went along ways!

Thank you NanoGurl, it is good to be back:)

I went with a current prime modular 2606 1/3 hp, I bought it off of ebay at a very good price. It is in very good shape, was used for under 60 days for a demo tank.
It's a little bigger than I thought it was going to be but it fit were I wanted it to.

Easy to set up, I have it connected to the output line of my skimmer and then from the output of the chiller to the sump. Very quiet operation and easy controller setup.

I got dis cool accent from up der in da UP area doncha know;)

Thanks 2farNorth:) Yes it could have been much worse, I did give the acros a chance to come back but they completely bleached out:(

I have read somewhere here on RC that plate corals have a great chance of coming back to life. Hopefully it can get back to normal soon.

Wow thanks for the link 2farNorth very nice looking rock.

Thanks erics3000 for bringing up Marco rock.

yeah I should have included the link. The good thing is when you order base rock there is less wait because of water and there rocks are very pourous. I have been away for a month but now that I ma back in Fl the temps here are insane. I think it was 97 in Orlando a few days ago.

I would like to say, the people we met during our vacation in the UP were very friendly and helpful. It was a very nice time and we will be going back again. We noticed during the news last night that there are wild fires consuming many acres of forest land very close to where we stayed, I hope that those fires can be contained soon.
