Does anybody know of a way to sex angelfish?

I am looking for a guide or other information on sexing some of the rarer ones.

Specifically…

Flame Angel (Centropyge loriculus)

Gold Flake Angel (Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus)

Golden Angel (Centropyge aurantius)

Regal Angel (Pygopllites diacnthus)

Blueface Angel (Pomacanthus xanthometopon)

Queen Angel (Holocanthus ciliaris)

Japanese Pygmy Angel (Centropyge interruptus)

Personifer Angel (Chaetodontoplus personifer)

Any information would be appreciated.

Read Martin Moe Jr.

Read Martin Moe Jr.

Martin Moe Jr. has a book out that shows how he spawned French Angel fish, fry development, feeding.
You could get some useful information from his book.

Scott Michael's Angelfishes & Butterflyfishes is your best source for info compied on all of these fish together

Pairing them is generally fairly straightforward, but if you are considering breeding angels, you have quite a challenge ahead of you

HTH :D

I have got the Scott Micheal book right here but i am looking for a tad bit more in depth information. I don't plan on breeding them. Just getting them paired up.

On a second Note

Can any one explain this.......

I picked up a Gold flake angel about 4 weeks ago. I have been just basically watching her do her thing for 4 weeks making sure she is eating. Well I was at a wholesalers today and I saw another GF angel about half the size of mine eating formula one almost from my hand. So I bought it, got it back to my shop and started acclimating it in with the original one I had. Watching to see if they would get along or just beat the snot out of each other. To my suprise they seemed to be completey fine with each other So I finished acclimation and dropped her in they didn't nip and they didn't fight. I watched them for about 30 minutes. All was well so I turned off the lights. Well I must of missed the page in all the books I read about what happens when the lights go out for two Goldflake angels. It was like I rang the fight bell in the UFC. After I marveled over how awesome it was two see two $350 fish fighting each other, I seperated them.

Has anybody ever seen something like this? That is as soon is the lights go out Fight club begins?

Holy cow!!
I know you separated them, but are they still in the same tank? - They may yet work things out given a day or so. Try making lights out completely "black" for a while - you can cover the tank with thick blankets if need be. I doubt they'd fight in pitch darkness and they're getting along while the tank is well lit....

I assume you mean actual nipping & not just chasing. IOW they weren't already mating, of course.

On that note - I've always wanted to see a couple of the larger angels mating. Since the spawning "dance" of dwarf angels is quite frenetic, seems like the larger angels it would leave all the other fish cowering in the corner - lol :D

I wish I could post some helpful experience - but mine is with the Centropyges. I can give one "just in case you're not already doing this" :) So...just in case - they need plenty of rockwork with room for hiding and swimming through. Makes pairing up much easier.

Don't know if you've read every page of Michael's book, but it is quite clear on the sexing of interupta(us) and loriculus. With the flames, it helps to have actually seen examples of the differences. There's an old thread I can hunt down, if you're interested.

There are probably enough photos in the book to help out with interruptus - but as those fish are so expensive, & easy to sex, your dealer will know which is which - just tell them what you want.

As for the Golden Angel (Centropyge aurantius), IMO, these cryptic beauties are often caught with cyanide and we should consider boycotting them to discourage this practice. I believe they are extremely difficult to catch.:D
