vangogh are you using mp10 or 40? and i see the black sand is getting moved by the current. i would get annoyed. any issues with the black sand your using?

Vangogh, that black sand looks good. Almost looks bare bottom.

Yeah, ran barebottom for years, thought I would try the black.

Vangogh121- Great looking tank love the black sand. It really makes everything outstand.

Thanks

vangogh: What are your tank dimensions and how many bulb Powermodule is that?

60x30x18 and its a 10x48 with lots of blue +'s (7) :)

I'm using 2 MP40's on reefcrest, sync'd.
I had them wide open and had to tone them down a bit, Sand is not blowing around and everything seems happy, With the slower flow, the elegence is opening to the size of a basketball and burning the adjacent corals. I can't win....

Its finaly up...

Hello Shallow Reefers. I have been watching this thread with great interest since joining RC not too long ago. I also have been watching the rimless cube build threads and reading as many posts as I can on this genre of reef tanks.

I am leaning strongly towards trying my hand at a shallow rimless tank - possibly of equal length and width dimensions but a "shallow" depth, such as 36x36x18.

First question (of many): It would seem that this "low height" tank would necessitate raising the stand height a bit (6" to 12" higher than normal) so that viewing the tank would not require bending or stooping for average height adults. On the other hand, the "standard height provides the benefit of being able to look down at the reef through the top of the water, something one could not do easily if the tank was raised up 6 to 12 additional inches.

What say you who already have shallow tanks: raise them or keep at "standard" stand height? My research indicates that "standard height is usually between 27 and 31 inches.

I just received my 36x36x18 tank and absolutely love the dimensions. My stand is 28" tall and looks great in my room. There were three reasons why I went with a lower stand, the first being necessity (only way it would fit in the room) and the other because I love looking down at the reef. The third reason is the tank is next to my computer desk and is at eye level when sitting on the chair. I feel that the height is very personal and depends on your room arrangement. Good luck with your tank as the dimensions are fabulous!

thanks, I'm taking my time and doing it right this time. Get good equipment first, then worry about stocking it.

i'm actually taking the same steps. though i have most of my stuff from my previous builds i plan to upgrade them slowly.

Nick, I have been looking at setting up a shallow tank for a few weeks now and came across your tank, which is just about exactly what I was looking for.

I have been in contact with Envision and am close to pulling the trigger on a tank pretty similar to yours.

Anything you would change about what you ordered (like overflow size, placement) now that you have had it a while?

Thanks to every one here. The shallow reef club has been a revelation!

96x36x18" so I think it qualifies for the shallow tank club. Been set up for just about a year now. Still a work in progress though. Quite a bit of stuff I still want to get done and get it where I have envisioned. Hard to get a decent FTS since I have to stand on the other side of the room to get it all.

Some closer shots.
