Shallow reef tank Club

24x24x12

24x24x12

I can finally join the club as I have moved from my 12x12x12 cube to a 24x24x12 AIO DIY tank. The tank under the display is my ato tank. Its a big DIY project all around. DIY stand, filter section, ATO, and ATS. Been a project for about 4 months now finally have it up and running and loving it. Lighting is two Par 38's.

Please excuse the mess under the tank still working on the ATO system and need to put a front on the stand and location changed and the stand is not hidden by the couch.

hey guys, what type or lighting to you guys run on your shallow tanks? Mine is only 16" high and with about 2-3 inches of sand. Im running a Hamilton dual 150watt fixture with 2 brand new phoenix 150's and 2 54 watt ati blue plus t5's. all bulbs only weeks old. Im having second thoughts about having enough light. Im getting more and more into sps. Do any of you guys run 150's and successfully grow sps and clams?

I ran a par reading yesterday with a friends apogee meter and im only getting around 120-130 on the sand bed and ranges from 200-240 at the top of my rock work, Thats seems kinda low does it not?

I have a retro fit 250watt set up of 2 bulbs but i would have to build a canopy for it and am not looking forward to the higher heat and more energy consumption.

Do you guys think im over analyzing it and i will be fine with my 150's? I can run them as close as 2 or so inches from the top of the water since i have it hanging from the ceiling. I can post some pics of it later tonight.

New Member - New to Shallow Reefs

Hi All,

New member here. Bill from the UK but living in China (4yrs now). Love all the info on this site and hope to get involved with this shallow reef group!

I inherited a 150x60x50cm tank when first arriving in China. Had a lot of fun and modest success with that as a FOWLR. Moved from Shanghai to Shenzhen last weekend and the movers smashed it up. Have disposed of the shattered remains and am now embarking on a brand new shallow reef setup.

I will use my existing sump/fuge combo and keep the same stand. Tank measurements I have gone for are: 150x50x50. I have configured the tank something like this:

Tank_Outline.jpg

Will run a full width overflow comb on the short end, long drop down (noise is not a problem) into overflow area for good gas exchange and then plumbed down to fuge/sump.

I didn't want any bracing (euro or otherwise) so have gone way over the top on glass thickness (I hope!). Entire thing is made with 12mm, annealed glass. I'm pretty sure this will be fine without any bracing but any advice from those who know would be appreciated. (One of the advantages to living over here is that this custom built tank, delivered, cost me $62!)

For lighting I am thinking 2 of these:

Lumen_Aqua.jpg

12x 2W LEDs (6 white, 6 blue)
3 colour adjustment from 6500K to 15000K

Would be really grateful for any advice/tips any of you experts have to give me. I will keep you posted as to progress and post pics/updates as I start to put it all together.

Thanks!

Sorry - 1 more thing. I put all my LR into plastic trash cans and submerged them in tank water for the move. I hoped to get them into the new tank withing 2days - this hasn't happened. I reckon they will spend around 10days in the trash cans with no water filtration etc. Will they still be live rocks?

I you put a pump in the can to move the water around the rock should be fine. If not the water will go stagnant and the rock will die a very foul death.

Great!!!!
More details, please.

Its an 80 Gal Deep Blue Rimless frag tank with corner overflow. I Have it hooked up to a 55 gall sump in the balcony. At the time of the picture i was running a Hamilton all in one fixture with 2 150 watt phoenix bulbs and 2 ati blue plus t5s. I was not happy with the par readings after borrowing one of my friends par meters. I did however like the color.

I decided to go back to my old 250 watt retro fitted set up with 2 radiums. I just got two lemenmax elite reflectors which im waiting to receive in the mail which will be running 2 radium 250's on lumatek ballasts. I also just got a 36" reefbrite (all blue) fixture from a local aquarium society member. I just hooked it up last night. LOVE IT!

Here is the canopy i made for the retro fitted MH's

OK - have done that. Tank arrives this evening so should get them into a more hospitable environment soon. And then deal with the inevitable die off/cycle/bloom problems.

Thanks for advice.

After following along on this thread for a while, my next long term tank project will definitely be a shallow tank! I love the cubes, Yardboy has a super sick tank, but I've wanted a long tank to make a nice tall wave in as well. Kind of torn...........either way it will be at least 200+gal, and definitely rimless all led and basement sump setup. I'm so happy I found this page for all the inspiration and great ideas. I hope the updates and pictures keep rolling in and sparking new ideas for my future plans

Hi all,
Fitst off I've been in the hobby for just a short while (3 yrs) and can't believe I just now stumbled onto this amazing site!
I've had several tanks over the years and am finally ordering my first shallow tank next week and will be moving everything over from my 57g Deep Blue Edge eventually.
I was hoping to get some input from everyone on a few things! I've definitely decided to stay rimless and I really want a perfectly square base, but I need some input from the experts! (you all)

a. I was really interested in getting a center overflow, the tank will be seen from at least three sides (four depending on what size I end up with), but I hardly saw any at all! :( I was pretty excited about it but is there an overwhelming reason not to get a center overflow!?

b. I have been dreaming about a 36x36x15 tank but it looks like I can save about $150 if I get a 85g 34x35x17 (on special and odd dimensions due to a cancelled order) or $200 with a 60g 30x31x15. My current light is an evlotion 150w LED bar rated to cover 36x24x30 and after several highly technical experiments (aka cut/taped card board for tank dimensions and me simply holding the light overhead) I don't think I would have any problems keeping it. I rather like tanks that aren't 100% lit. I'd really hate to go from 36" to something much smaller or go a lot smaller than 57g...

I know I've rambled but I was hoping too much info was better than not enough! Thanks in advance for any help/advice/opinions!

Man looking at these tanks here, mine hurts to put on here! But regardless.. here's my 40Br:

Just came across this thread I love the tanks I am in the process of resealing a 90 gal breeder 48x24x16. I want to switch over from my 90 high tank My kids think it is to shallow so I was going to just sale it and stay with what I got. but I think I am going to go for it I really like the look it wont be rimless but I am going to build a nice canopy. so couple questions I like to exturnal overflow I was thinking of just drilling like 10 1/2 holes in the back for a skimmer and building a box, or maybe I can get a local glass company to saw some slits any thoughts. I will post some pics.
