Hey all. I have been keeping my sharks in my 600 gallon fowlr and i am now looking into building them a shark lagoon. I have heard of people using above ground pools with pond liners, but i do not want to use the soft side ones because this will be in my basement i i do not want to risk having all the water on the floor.my question is will the metal in the metal sided pool mess with the sharks? Just a thought but don't even the metal sided pools, which a friend of mine has told me are worth nothing as scrap anymore, which leads me to believe they contain far less actual metal than they used to (Aluminum i believe it was?), but arent they just a very thin soft liner under that thin metal-ish skin? In essence the same as the Index pools but with a thin metal-ish skin hiding the pool liner. Just my thoughts.
For a long term investment i would use wood, cement, FRP, thick EPDM Pond liners or any combination of them. I would love to do another lagoon in elaborate masonry but it becomes very costly and needs to be covered in marine epoxy or liquid fiberglass anyway. Good luck and do it up!
 
Just answered your PM, but here is an example. When I re-did my 5,000 - I rerouted the life support to this above ground pool for several weeks and moved all the livestock to it as a holding. No issues at all. My only advice is take your time setting it up and make sure you get enough sand under the liner to keep it level. Also be aware there will be a little sand creeping out from under it after the weight of the water pushes around a little.

Wow. Thats not what I was picturing at all! Thats a very snazzy above ground setup! It looks well built and sturdy.
If using that long term would it be advisable to lay an EPDM liner on top of the pool liner?
 
Nice setup. I would love for when I make or setup my lagoon in the future to have a viewing window. Top Down only really bugs me. Wonder if you could add an acrylic window to a pool like that ? Maybe a few layers built up of like 1/2" then sealed and bolted to the pool wall??? Unless those side are not very sturdy
 
I have seen acrylic windows cut into them. Sorry for the poor pic quality. It was after about 34 hours straight of a bull shark transport.

Zoodiver,

Do you always use the resin pools? That also looks like an 8 or 10 ft pool. What brand are you using. Most commonly I've seen the fiberglass ones fron dolphin, etc... But have considered aluminum as an alternative. I've been told the resin pools use regular steel hardware and have many steel parts that rust. Love to know your experience. .
