Shark produces mermaids purses

Sharks!!!!
Is it natural for a shark to produce and lay eggs just because it's time? Granted I have no idea if the eggs contain anything or not. There is no male In the tank and no way to have contact. Unless some cross breeding took place. I have had the shark (Pickin) ever since a juvenile pup.

There were a total of four purses and just recently she laid two more

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There have been sharks that can reproduce asexualy but i am not sure what species have. But yours could be doing that

Not sure if it is the same type of shark but I followed a thread that took like three months before the egg hatched and the water has to be pristine. Including the room that the tank is in.. When I get back to work tomorrow I will try to find that thread and post it for you to read up on.

Female bamboo and epaulette sharks will lay 'blank' eggs. It's fairly common in single sex / single animal tanks like you have. The best way to tell is hold them (in the water) up against a light and look for a yolk in the middle. You should see a clear visible circle.

Spermatophore holding is rare in captive animals, and will happen when mating occurs, then the female wait until a proper time to allow fertilization to take place.

Please do, any information would be great. Even the room huh!?!

Zoodiver- good to know, I have been trying to find info on the subject. Is it just natural for them to lay eggs at a certain time?

Depends on the shark. Some will lay seasonally, some will be egg producing machines and keep kicking them out. Do you have anything else in the tank with her?

If you were closer, I'd say bring her down and put her with one of my males for awhile. You'd have viable eggs that way. I gave up looking for an adult female, and just started growing out a few so I could get a breeding group going.

MFK has some pretty solid shark info from over the years. Everything from bamboo hatching to bull shark care.

I'm a member over there too, I'll have to search around and not sure why I haven't. Thanks again. If there was a simple way to bring her down, I would definitely be interested in mating her.
