Shipping Livestock!

I was wondering if putting activated carbon into a bag with a live fish in it would work very well to help absorb anything harmful and maybe oxygenate the water as well, all for better shipping?

Any comments or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

It won't do anything to add oxygen to the water, and it doesn't remove ammonia. The types of organics that carbon does remove aren't an issue with shipping fish, so the carbon really won't do anything worthwhile for that appliclation.

When I moved my fish 1200 miles I used Kordon Amquel drops every now and then over the course of a week (i also did water changes though so maybe this isn't helpful)...my fish all turned out fine. You may consider putting a drop or 2 in the bag, don't know how it will work.

Correct me if i am wrong, but isn`t zeolite used freshwater only? I thought the way you drove ammonia out of it was by recharging it in saltwater! Nag the fish with oxegen and keep them warm- thats what the pros do. Additives will only be a problem.

Your probably right but there is an ammonia removing substance used in saltwater, I'm just getting the names mixed up.

aerate the water (battery powered air pump) and keep them warm if it's over a long distance or time period. I've had fished pailed for +6 hours with no ill effects.

keep it simple, constants are good ( temp, water quality, salinity, etc.) and the fish should be fine. It's the drastic changes that kill. And obviously being in a bag for 30 hours isn't good anyway you cut it....

i used breathable bags, had the fish packed in a box for about 40 hours. no air at all in the bags, and the bags were seperated from eachother with cardboard spacers.

i lost a urchin and emerald crab (i think their spaces got wet which sorta smothered the bags)

you can get 100 breathable bags for about 20-30$ depending where you find them. i bought the large and medium sizes and use them for everything. they are a great conversation peice at the club meetings too when you bring coral to trade in them.
