Hello Cubers! I am in the planning stages of my 48X36X24 (180 gallon) cube tank. It will house mostly softies and lps and will also be barebottom (starboard). Can you guys give me your opinions on my potential set up.

1. One overflow with two 1 1/2 drains with one 1 1/2 return line. How many gallons per hour should I push? Recommend any good pumps?

2. Closed loop with two 1 1/2 inputs and four 1 inch outputs for circulation. Recommend a good pump?

3. Myreefcreations MR-2 skimmer with genx-40 pump.

4. Sump will be a huge horse trough with some live rock and various algaes.

5. Lighting? No clue yet, was thinking of two 250 watt halides with supplemental vho's.

Your opinions would be most valued.

Cheers. :bum:

um, so like thats not a cube? its not even a double wide

otherwise nice setup
i dont use vho supp's on my tanks anymore.
1. fire risk
2. dont think i need them, but i am going to try the 14k bulbs next time around

Toledofishguy -

If you're sure you're doing softies and never sps - you'll be good with just the two 1.5" drains and a 1.5" return - won't need a closed loop for just softies - you'll tear them apart with (2). rest sounds great - make sure you check out T5 lights as an alternative to VHO's - if you're in for the long run they will be less expensive, but you'd have to be looking at about 3+ years.

oh, and a pic of my stand and cube

behind the pH monitor there is a mag 9.5 on a closed loop - you can see the plumbing - there's also a t'd-off line running a rowaphos reactor I made out of a tap-water filter you can see on the right.

MadtownMax - Thanks for the input. I was thinking the same thing about the closed loop, but need the flow to keep waste in the water instead of settling on the floor of the tank. I dont want any powerheads if possible. Maybe just one closed loop input and two outputs. We'll see.

take a look at the oceans-motions 4-way, you could have the 1.5" split 4-ways, including one to sweep across the bottom of your tank - (maybe a spraybar?) , and then have three others for alternating flow - they're a little expensive, but if it's saving you the $$ of an extra pump and extra plumbing for the closed loop it pays for itself.

I was thinking of ocean motions or a sea swirl off my return. Like I said, I know I dont need a ton of flow just enough to sway the softies. My main concern is bottom flow.

I'm getting a few revolutions w/ multiple angled nozzles (you'd have to check the web page for what I'm talking about) that way I'll have flow that both sweeps at a multiple diagonal angles to get flow down to the bottom as well as going straight into the side of the tank and down (when it rotates ;) ) to "flush the bottom.

Very nice tank! Looks like great workmanship. I like the beveled edges.

Are you going to have a sump? Or is everything going in the back?

I used to have a 13 g with the same configuration. It worked great.
I had SPS and a clam for a long time in that set up. I had it in my office on my desk just like yours.
Great memories.

Yours is a sweet tank.

Here is a couple pics of mine. My bud Armando says its not a cube. I say it is.

What do you all say??
