Show me your Pillar's

skypapa - try plastic suppliers, manufacturing companies and even sign shops. I googled a couple places in your area and found American Plastic Supply & Mfg Clearwater, FL plus I would bet a dollar most of the suppliers sell online these days, www.USPlastic.com; look under sheets and rods

Thanks.
I did search and find those same sites.
And although I grew up in Clearwater, it is a 2 hour drive from here.
I was hoping someone would say something local rather than have to order. Like a craft shop or some other unlikely chain store, lol.

i read some where that people where using the bottom bar from platic hangers. most of those are 1/4" - 5/16" diam @ 14" - 15" long, not too bad since you can get a dozen cheap hangers for a couple dollars.

I'd be afraid of some of those plastics leaching.
Also I like the strength, ability to bend, and the bond achieved w/ weldon on acrylic.
There must be a local place for you to buy this stuff.
We have places that have bargain bins all the time w/ scrap pieces for cheap.

Here's mine.

Started like this which I hated in my 34" high tank:

Then I tore out the old overflows and made these structures:

And under just accent LEDs in this pic):

Although I really liked it the open space, there was not near enough room for my corals. I made another stack in the middle and linked it with an arch. Here's the final shot and I've started to add all my coral back in. The rest is waiting in the basement tank.

Here's a cool thing about doing pillars.
I just recently sold my 2 smaller tanks and transfered everything into my new 150g.
I just lifted pillars out from both and dropped them into new tank.

I'll be making some pillars to accent my tank, right now I just have the arch done :) I figure I'll make pillars to hide the overflows, and maybe a couple others to help fill in the empty space below the arch since its so big (spans about 4').

Sure,

Rocks 1 and 4 are my really heavy base rocks. 1, 2, and 3 are rodded together with 1/2" acrylic rods. 4, 5, and 6 are also rodded together. 6 and 7 are also zip tied to the overflows. 7 and 3 are zip tied together. 8 and 9 right now are unattached, held in by pressure alone, though I'll be using some zip ties and epoxy to make sure they stay put.

Just read through the whole thread...thanks guys for some great ideas...I am upgrading from a 120 to a 180 and definitely plan on making a least a pillar or two.

Has anyone just used a large piece of live rock as the base to secure the rod? Or is it best to use the acrylic plate under the live rock for better stablity.

Im using a large rock, but it need to be pretty large as it is easy to tip over with small ones. Wiz ;)
