are you going to get the conspic from the guy in st pete? i was talking with him about possibly getting it...but we both decided it would be too risky to be put with dragons :(

hey what are trying to do high jack my thread!!!!!!!!! So where is everone elses eels. See,s there are only 4 people with eels on RC???? Tim

Call me crazy, but I actually like the color pattern on Hawaiians just as much as Japanese. Does anyone know why the two vary in color so much, or do colors signify sex? Are dragons every collected from Midway, Xmas, or other islands?

While keeping dragons I have noticed that their color darkens over time and they kind of blend into their surroundings. Also I have found there is really no distinguishable difference between a male and female. The way I can tell the difference between sexes is the male is much more dominant and always eats first. I have noticed that the dragons color in the throat and head area becomes more red over time. I feed my dragons fresh shrimp, squid, mahi and tuna filets (just cut them up). I try to vary their diet so maybe one day they will mate :)

Also Dragons have been seen and collected out of Xmas, and Midway according to divers in that region.

Hey Ian i was just playin. about the highjack thing.

As far as color variations. I think that each Dragon is different. I don't think Dragons from japan are prettier than Hawaiian eels. From what i have seen that certain pockets where they are collected. both in Japan and Hawaii have a slight color variation. As Ian said I think it has to do with what the surrounding habitat looks like. If the rock is heavy in Red corraline Algae, than the eel will develop that intense red that seems to be so desirable. I think they are just like Rhinopias and anglers. When you get that amazing bright yellow painted angler, unless you have crazy skill and can grow yellow sponges, then your angler will turn drab. i have seen my Rhinopias do it right before my eyes. When I had my purple rhinopias frondosa he eventually turned brownish/red because I did not put in him an aquarium with purple coralline algae! I eventually moved him to a reef tank and voila he turned bright purple again!

Ian...I heard through the grape vine that your yellow mouth did not make it...sorry to hear bro...the next time you get one...make sure that whoever packs it puts the Eel in a secure plastic container with soldered holes, then put the container in a quadrupled 3 mil thick ship bag with newspaper lined between bags for extra protection. This will ensure that The Yellowmouth can never bite through the ship bag again....Aloha Les
