That melanosoma complex is exciting and confusing... do you have a pic? I spoke with Gerry Allen about them... he described C. vanderloosi, and was going to look at another possible new species in the complex in the Phillipines last month... do you have a pic and know its origin?

Majestics are on one end of the bell curve and full korans are on the other, changing very large. Combine this with the fact that he has chrysurus blood in him, which hold their vertical bars through adulthood, and that adds to his "young looks" at a decent size... I'm excited to see how he grows up...

I did get the small griffisi too... doing well... this is sort of the bandit angel of the Line Islands... never too plentiful and almost always large... I was happy to score the little guy...

Well, I'm pretty sure its not a vanderloosi. The Grey "smoky" patch certianly covers a large area on the body, not just the head area (which I consider an important part of their ID). Really, though, I dont know the animals origin or history at all. Aside from his tail coloration (which isnt really dimidiatus or melanosoma), I would really have to say it is certainly a melnaosoma.

Your description of the phenomenom with those angels is exactly what intrigues me so much. ANGELFISH RULE!!

Here is my Phillipines C. vanderloosi.

Yeah, mine has a grey patch that extends all the way to near the end of the dorsal. But his tail isnt a solid yellow, but it isnt a typical melanosoma coloration, either. I think he may just be changing out from juvi coloration.

I guess mine aren't terribly rare but you don't see them often in the hobby. My little (Sepia Bandensis)

I do believe that trigger1976 posted a pic of ONE of the TWO 1" bandit angelfish that I caught last week Wednesday. Is that considered rare enough to jump into this discussion?

Only if you can me some, also.

Probably not the most rare, but I've not often seen one. I picked up a Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus the other day. Not real sure what the common name is, as they're nore really all that common.

blue eye kole?

I'm not convinced that's what it is, but it may be. The blue-eye kole I've read as a Ctenochaetus binotatus, and this one seems to lack the darkness that those present as juveniles (dark bodies with yellow tails and blue eyes).

It's hard to tell with fish based on their appearance, especially as juveniles, but I think this is the Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus, which I've seen referred to as the blue-lip or short-tail bristletooth.
