Oh, No problem. I just assumed that it was some sort of acronym.
 
Here's my bad boy that has recently started eating Xenia, Torch Corals, etc. I've had him almost 9 years.

His/her name is "Matt's Fish" because my husband wanted him. :)

that is really strange that he would start eating soft polyps--how big is he and what size of tank do you have him in?
 
I posted about him eating corals a few days ago. He's about 8.5" and he's in a 125. He was in my 75 gallon for 8 years until about 1 year ago when I upgraded to the 125 and he didn't start eating corals until the last few months. At least I have lot's of Xenia. :)

Yea i have heard of them known to start eating corals when they got bigger or older. I mean you can ask Melev because i know he has had experience with this. He might be a good source to ask about this. But i have heard that they can. When i did hear this i was like wow i never knew that really any tang picked at corals. One thing you mgiht be able to do to stop him/her from picking is either feed more or move the corals around the tank if you can.
 
You have to keep them well fed or they will find other alternatives. I'm not saying you aren't though so dont take offense to that please. Do you feed your Regal Tang meaty foods? I know they are more apt for meaty foods with algae in there diet. Most people will only feed them algae though.
 
IMO Tangs should always have meaty foods in their diet. They do eat algae and are herbivores but if you was a vegetarian, would you wanna eat salad for the rest of your life?
 
I love tangs. I have a 65g tank. I have no tangs in it. I have a naked clown, a bangaii, a sunburst anthias and a 4 inch rabbitfish. I am upgrading to a 180g. I want some tangs. A reefer buddy said no more than 2 tangs in a 180. My plan is to have a 75g fuge and 30g sump in the basement. Also, lots of open space and swimming room in the tank. Really planning on having lots of sand and lots of room to swim laps. I have read and read and read. I think the Atlantic blues are wonderful, the orange shoulders, the d. sailfin and the yellows and hippos are great. The only other fish I plan on adding are a pair of blue spotted jawfish, maybe some more sunbursts and not much else. Maybe a wrasse.

So given what I have said, 180g six foot tank, lots of room, probably 1800 gph ... how many would you add?

I have eliminated some from the list as they are so aggressive, clown, sohal, etc.

in a 180 gal tank your flow rate should be between 3600 and 7200 gph
what is included in your flow rate of 1800 gph?

I have about 5500 gph in my 120 gal and the tangs love to swim against the current constantly

Depending on the estimated adult size of the tangs you could probably have 3 tangs without having to consider upgrading in the future
eg yellow and tomini 7 inches max size
then have a blue like you want which could reach 13 inches

esp the regal tang--it was borne a carnivore and as an adult comes out of the closet as a herbevoire

IMO he is just too big now for the 125 gal. My regal is half that size and I figure I have about a year left with my 120 gal and intent to upgrade to 250 gal. I am looking at 6 inches being the max that I can keep him for upgrading because-------

The tangs are constant grazers---how do you keep enough food in the tank for it to graze constantly all day---and the bigger it gets that becomes even more problematic.
It is easy to say give him more meat ect but that is only at one or two times a day----there metabolism is so fast that they are hungry 15 min again after you feed them
 
Hi cap'n -- does not include closed loop -- just 3 1 inch drains. Plan on having the return feed up through both a CL/manifold/spray bar set up and then up through 3 1 inch holes in the bottom ...

I thought the Atlantic Blue would get too big. Mimic's are cool looking too. Can't decide. But I do have time to ponder. Like 6 months at least!

What do you think about 2 hippos and 2 yellows?
 
Actually, the Caribbean Blue or Atlantic gets to 9 in from what I read so I am thinking a yellow, a mimic and a Caribbean Blue ....

in a 180 you might get away with it-- but in mine I think the two tangs would be fighting with each other all the time.
