Show Piece Fish Under $1000?

Lineatus Fairies are nice, but for the money, I would go with either Earl's Fairy or Mauritius Flasher Wrasse; both can be had for ~$600 from the right sources. Or two slightly less flashy, but equally rare and wonderful Fairies would be C. squirei or C. johnsoni. The Feminus Tamarin Wrasse should also be on your shortlist, if you want more of a challenge.

If Anthias are more to your liking, how about a harem of Ventralis Anthias? The Blotched and Red-Saddled Anthias are a couple other nice flashy ones.

I absolutely love the coloring on the Candy Basslet, but I kinda agree that it would be a waste to put it in a big tank where you never see it. I've had a Swales Basslet in a 40 Breeder for nearly a year and the only time I ever see it is for two or three seconds to grab a bite when I feed the tank, then off it goes into the rocks again.

A secretive small fish for a 93 gallon tank as a show piece? I wouldn't recommend that.
I wouldn't say they are secretive at all. My pair is out and about quite often.

I'll agree that they won't be out and about all the time but if something unique is wanted. Plus they are totally reef safe.

I'm not a huge wrasse fan. I'd much rather have anthias. Thank you all for the ideas.

I'd love a Red Sea Regal Angel, but I don't want to risk coral loss. Do the ones that do eat stuff tend to go after certain kinds of corals? I had an emperor who didn't touch a thing in his old tank eat all of my zoas overnight. I knew I was taking a chance, but it ****ed me off more than I thought so I'd rather not risk it again...I think..
If you don't want wrasses I'd 2nd your choice on anthias. You probably could do some of the larger ones if you wanted to; bimaculatus and red striped are some of my favorites.

Spend your money on the candies; if you want to spend money on a cool fish that few people have.

Based on what I know about their behavior in the wild, aside from my personal experience with Swissguard and Swalesi basslets, they hide/live in caves...many times in pairs. Are candy basslets nice? They sure are. But would I suggest them as a centerpiece fish for OP's 93 gallon tank? I can't because showpiece fish is the highlight of your tank that's out and about. Otherwise, I don't disagree on their beauty.

I've had one of these for about a year, and I've really enjoyed him. Always on the move - gorgeous colors, doesn't bother anybody, although I don't keep shrimp. Not too expensive, but you don't see too many of them.

When people see my tank, he is usually the one people liked best (even over the mystery wrasse and regal angel I had at the time).

Earls are beautiful, and I have a nice male, but compared to a supermale lineatus, it doesn't compare.
Mauritus flasher are nice too, but difficult to find.

Squirei I don't think are even ever collected and the odd times they are usually go to Japan.

Johnsoni are nice too, I had a pair once, but now with c.Isosoles, and lunatus flooding the market, you can have a very similar fish for way cheaper.

Anthias....if you want a beautiful anthias, Karen Britain just bred the H. Funscpinnis. I'm not sure if she plans on selling them yet, but I know you can contact Rufus for info.

Regal angle for sure if you are experience. But usually any large colorful fish can be a center piece. Dori for example.

I hope people aren't thinking about putting a Blue Hippo "Dory" in a 93 cube...

Why not? Baby hippos should be fine in 10 gallon tanks for a while. Once they outgrow it they can't be released to the toilet bowl so they get back to the ocean... :debi:

Bad advise. Nothing larger than a dwarf angel in a 93g, and no tangs other than a single bristletooth tang (even thats debatable)

Wow look at all these police officers here. I was merely referring to what a center piece can be rather than giving specific advice on the OP's tank.

I agree with no large fish. I think a lot of the people making suggestions don't realize a 93 cube is only 30" corner to corner.

A mandarin isn't rare to the reef community but they definitely get a lot of wows from others. Otherwise, I'd say a small wrasse or dwarf angel. If you want something that's rare to the trade, you should keep an eye on the diver's den and see what comes up.

I'd go with a awesome wrasse collection for the 93g. Someone mentioned earlei wrasses dont compare to lineatus wrasses but I disagree. I have a 5 inch super male earlei and also a male lineatus and the earlei definitely wins.

Not sure what it is your saying about cops, but I will encourage you not to continue... You could of just said, "I didn't read it was a 93g cube" and we would of understood what happened. This forum is about giving sound advise, not knee jerk purchases
