Nice work you guys......I agree, that mantle/ shelf looks like a great place to place your beer while staring buzzingly off into your reef.....LOL..... Can't wait to see this one in person...

Good job so far guys!

Mike aren't you concerned with the load your putting on the side braces of the stand? It seems to me that your going to be putting a lot of sheer on the screws/nails that you used to assemble the piece...

I've been building stands for a little while, but building other things for a lot longer, but on all my stands, I make the top panel the same size as the tank, and make sure that it's resting on the 2x4's below, that way the weight of the stand is being applied to the supports...

Have you ever had any problems doing it this way?

Don,

You need to add two taps to either side of the tank. So you can have one tap with Heineken Beer and the other you can rotate. You already have a nice shelf to put the drafts on. (-:

Great work. Keep it up. This tank is going to be great.

I wish the wall between my garage and house was my famliy room then I would look at doing something similar.

Cheers,
Chris

His stand is going to be fine, I used 10D hot dipped galv nails and liquid nails. its not going anywheres, theres alot of bracing thats in the wall also that you cant see. Plus Ive built a few like this and theve been up for a couple of years and its just fine, Your not going to crush a 2x4 when its flipped like that with the weight of the tank (120) water and sand and rocks thats on it.. :D

You cant see that in the pic?? thats the way it is man...:D

Actually from the pictures it's clear to see that it's not built that way. Yes you have a panel the same size of the tank, but all the weight of the tank will be placed on the front and back braces, since they are the only ones touching a 2x4 post. The sides of your panel line up with a brace, therefore not supporting the weight.

In order for your panel to support the full weight evenly you would have had to make the joints a mortise and tenon joint, rather than a butt joint, right?

I agree with you that the weight of the tank will not crush the 2x4, but my concern would be right after the 2x4 running the length of the tank since you have those two joints meeting on top of one another.

I'm not trying to bash your work or anything, actually my original question was asking if you were worried about the sheer strength of your nails on those joints, and if you've ever encountered any problems with them if you'd done this type of setup before...

Nope NEVER had a problem and never will, Thank you...

And NO I am not worried about 1 thing about it.

Thank you for your concern but it is not needed as this will be fine.

Im NOT going to debate with you over this, its built fine and is not going anywheres,

By the way did you happen to know that the weight of a glass tank is on all 4 corners???? And all 4 corners are supported with 2x4s underneath. You keep to Health Insurance and Ill build what I want to HOW I want to....

Ill be over his house Sat why dont ya stop by so we can take in person about this face to face, that way you can see how it is built

LOL yeah man, people love to poke their noses into something when they really dont know whats up. Hopefully he will stop by and take a look see....
