Shrimp ID....

No pic, cuz I'm not home right now, but maybe someone can shed some light on my new shrimp. I acquired him from another reefer in my area, sight unseen (was getting some other stuff from his parting out sale and had him through the shrimp into my purchase). It has the body of coral banded, big long front claws, but the marking of a skunk cleaner, a single broad red stripe that runs down it's back, but no banding. Has anybody seen this coloration on a coral banded? Is it a totally different species? Hybrid?

Sounds like one of the Stenopus pyrsonotus types here is mine, sorry obout quality, it was from my cell phone

very cool shrimp, one of the biggest of the Stenopus (coral banded) species. Mine is big, but not at all aggressive, keep it with some pygmy angels, some pipefish, some atlantic scarlet lady cleaners, and many other small shrimp like pederson's cleaners and bumble bee shimp.

Hey philter if you dont mind me asking and since we're talking about shrimp, how are your bumble bee shrimp? I've seen them go after cucumbers and, well, the types of critters harlequins would like to go after so i'm not sure what i'd feed mine or if i could even safely keep it in the tank i'd want it in

Chrisstie,
I've collected them many times and never seen them with stars cucumbers or urchins even though the books say that is what they eat. Mine eat frozen shrimp and I hardly ever see them. I have kept them in the past for longer times then the pair I have now (to see pic of them look in the marine plant forum on MY NEW PLANTS (PICS)). I also have a harlequin shrimp that I collected in 2006 while diving in HI and they don't seem to go after the stars that I put in for the harlequin, but it is a full sized female so maybe that is intimidating. I don't keep urchins or cucumbers so can't say what they are going to do to them, Good luck with yours,
Phil
