Silicone for inside aquaria

for what its worth, dow corning 999-A is a neutral cure silicone, and much, much, much...did i say much, stronger than the all glass stuff

If you could get a Big Name tank builder to tell you what silicone they use, you will hear one of two things

Dow Corning 999-A

or

GE 1203/GE 1000 Contractor Series

By the way, the 999-A costs about 3 bucks a tube

where are you finding 999-a for so cheap

Well thanks everyone for your... encompassing responses. I'll probably go with GE I for the price unless i can find the 999-a in home depot for the same price.

:)

Eh, Ge1 is totally fine for aquarium use. I have used it in the past, and I know many tanks have been made with GE1, so regardless, what some may say, it works fine. It may not be FDA approved as an NSF product, but regardless of the "not for aquarium use" lawyer speak, it works just fine.

for the way you and I used it,it's just a gasket, adhesion strength is not an issue........but for an all glass construction I'd recommend the better stuff :D

Just seconding the recommendation. Wasn't trying to step on your toes. I was hoping that it might inspire more pictures of the silicone tubes so I might recognize them in the store.

Did not think you were stepping on my toes,:)

You know, I really don't care what silly cone people use whether it is cheap, easy to come by--and junk, or a good quality silicone suitable to the task. It is not my tank, or one that I have built. Keep buying the junk at Home Depot, leaves more of the good stuff available-- locally, for me to use. :D

Where do you find that locally? Does is it come in clear and black? I've only used the AGA stuff... How would it compare it to the Momentive?

I don't see anywhere on my tubes of AGA where it says FDA. I'm assuming this means it is not considered "food grade"

I have the MSDS for the Aqueon/AGA silicone used to build their tanks. They emailed it to me, a while back. You may or may not be surprised to know that it is manufactured by:

Waterford Plant
260 Hudson River Rd
Waterford NY 12188

The Momentive silicone in the picture is manufactured by:

Momentive Performance Materials
Waterford Plant
260 Hudson River Rd
Waterford NY 12188

Momentive "acquired" GE Silicones in 2006. This product, however, is not even closely related to GE I Window and Door.

I am not saying the product in the photo is the product AGA uses. And they did not want to tell me what product it was. But had I pushed it a bit more, they probably would have. I think I need to put more clarification to my recommendations, and put an "or" in there, on the label FDA approval, OR labeled for the application. You are looking for products that are proven NON-toxic, common usage does not prove that. Testing does. Anyway, this is turning into another rant. I am pretty hard line when it comes to using products inconsistent with their labeling.

Anyway, you can get that tube of silicone RTV103 black, RTV108 Translucent, from Grainger's for ~10 bucks. (less than the AGA brand I believe)

Where can you even find the SCS1200 silicone? Also, I many tubes do I need for a 44x24x22 tank. I believe that amounts to about 224 lineal inches plus another 70+ inches for the weir.

Few tubes out to be more than enough. Well if you like the scenic route across the state, Piedmont Plastics carries SCS1200, Pompano Beach, or Daytona Beach. Really though, I would hit Grainger's in Sarasota for the RTV. The Grainger's here is just up the street and around the corner behind Home Depot.:D Hey just tryin to make it esy for ya.

I like easy. So you think the RTV is just as good? What is your def of a few? I don't think you ever gave me an opinion on just making the glass 1" shorter for the weir instead of a notch. Also 1/4" or 3/8" glass for the OF box? I wrote you answer down, lets see if I am correct.
John

You like it easy huh? Easy = Have someone build it for you FEW = 3 - 4. Better idea, get a whole lot more, and build something else for practice, before you tackle your display tank, and you will not run out. I prefer the ends of the weir attached to the side panels, i.e. notched. If you wrote down the answer, why ask it again?

Jim

Practice is for wimps, I am going for the real deal. Going to tape the seams to keep the silicone in the general area of where it should be.

"If you wrote down the answer, why ask it again?"
Because I never did get the answer....I was just guessing at what you would say. My guess is 3/8".

you guys definitely know more than me.....

if you are building a tank it sounds like you should know what you are getting into and get good stuff to prevent having a tank in your carpet ......if you are putting a few baffles in a sump, it probably doesn't matter as long as it is safe...and i have heard enough people say that GE1 is safe, no matter how low on the silly cone (he he).totum pole it may be.

Thanks for the info, it is always good to learn something new!!!

mscdirect.com has it for around $9. The good thing about MSC is they will ship overnight at the same cost as ground so you can have it next day.

Practice may be for whimps, but would you rather pull apart your display tank because it is leaking, or a practice sump?
