New Math Formula
1.To find a woman you need Time and Money,
therefore: Woman = Time x Money
2.¡°Time is Money¡±
So, Time = Money
3.Therefore:
Woman = Money x Money
Woman= (Money)©÷
4.¡°Money is the root of all problems¡±
Money = ¡îProblems
5. Therefore:
Woman =(¡îProblems)©÷
Woman=Problems

LOL Dannie. Even women who don't require much time and money could be problematic. Many of them are just plain nuts. I can laugh because I don't qualify for any of the above. I like reefs too so I guess that makes me a dream woman to many of you guys lol. Well maybe before I got married and had four kids ; )

How do you add curved edges to something? I was trying to recreate my dresser in Sketchup the other day and all the edges of the doors and handles are rounded. I couldn't manage to do that. :(

Curved edges is fairly simple - if it's a simple arc adjust your view to see the side of the object, draw an arc onto the surface, then use the follow me tool to 'drag' the excess away.

There's also the "Soften edges' under window / soften edges - haven't played with it much but I understand it's supposed to smooth things out.

It would be cool if people posted their Sketchup files so other people could copy things like skimmers and other items. Or make a library or reef tank images. It would save a lot of time. I will post mine when I get a little further along.
Good idea, I wonder how many times the same items have already been drawn - would be nice if an off the shelf 55g AGA tank could be downloaded instead of drawn each time.

I'm currently trying to model egg-crate / egg-grate What a bloody nightmare :lol: I'll definitely post it up if I can figure out how to draw it properly.

For you guys drawing tanks - Definitely put the offset tool to use; it will draw an adjacent line at X" from your chosen surface.

I watched one of the tutorial videos and figured out how to do a curved edge! Yippee! What I wasn't able to figure out was how to do two adjacent curved edges, but I didn't play with it that much.

For example, you take a roundover router bit and run it around 4 sides of a piece of wood. I know what I'm trying to say, just not sure how to say it right.

Thanks!

Heres one of my sump.
24q1mbm.jpg

Very cool sump design. I'm trying to guess what the extra compartments are for. Will you explain what the intent for each section is. I'm guessing the skimmer goes in the drain section. The next section is a fuge? After that a small frag prop section? Then the bubble trap and the return.

One comment/question. It doesn't look like the sump can handle much extra water. The water level is close to the top. Is it designed to handle the return plumbing and back siphon water when the main pump goes off? The return section looks small. Like you are planning an auto top off.

You have all the components correct. If I don't have frags or something, I can experiment with different types of macro algae, and easily remove it if I don't like it. Or I can just put heaters, probes, or other equipment there. The water level is 4 inches from the top, the baffles are 9" (+ - an inch) and the Tank is 12 inches tall. I am planning to use an auto top off.

Now I just have to build it. haha

I wish this program was cheap. I am running out of free minutes on this program. I could draw with this all day. Its great. So I will share my sump as well. Enjoy.

Free minutes? Sketchup is free. Oh - You downloaded the pro version, go back and download the free version.

Andy - Do you have a link for the free version. What I downloaded is the Sketchup 5 Version. I don't see anyother version to download.

I love Sketch up! I have been using it awhile at work. I use the Follow me tool all the time for shaping corners as in this pic.

You can also use it to Lathe a profile into a cylindrical shape like this

For the life of me I can't figure out how to bend cylinders. I am trying to put plumbing in but can't get the cylinders to bend. Its the Pro 5 version.

Draw a circle the radius of the pipe fitting. From the point that defines the center, draw the line that will define the shape of the curve (this will be perpendicular to the face of the circle).

After that, select the "Follow Me" tool. Use it to click on the face of the circle, and then pull it along the line you drew. The circle will extrude itself along the path.

The real power of Sketchup (and the reason Google bought it) is the inference engine. While this makes it easy for the general public to render their homes for Google Earth, it can lead to much frustration to people like us trying to line up plumbing fittings!

Here's a few things that I've found make life a lot easier in Sketchup:

Using the arrow keys can help choose which axis your movement is locked on.

Holding the shift key after finding the right axis will you keep you locked on it.

Holding the control key while you initiate an action (moving an object, extruding an object, etc) performs the action on a new copy of the object.

Does anyone else have any good tips they'd like to share?

Whats the difference between the pro version and the free version. I currently use the Pro 5 Version.

About $495! :p
The pro version supports plugins and will allow you to export your designs to many different formats.

What you see at that link is just a picture of the SketchUp model, not the model itself.

Either greenstarman will have to upload his model into the SketchUp 3D Warehouse (you can get it by going to Google -> Get Models in SketchUp and searching the Warehouse) or by having GSMan email the SketchUp file directly.

I just went to the 3D Warehouse and searched on "sump" and found a couple that had already been uploaded. One of these might also get you started.

Good luck.
