Skimmate smells god awful

So I emptied my skimmer cup tonight, and it's killing me. Every time I crack that bad boy open, the whole basement smells like someone burped a colostomy bag. It's horrible.

What gives? My old skimmer never smelled like this. Maybe it's because my old skimmer was a POS?

Sounds like your skimmer is doing a good job.
I always try to get my kids to smell the skimmate when I empty it. I jokingly egg them on to take a sip and tell them the secret ingredient in my cooking is "fish nastys".

Yes, remember it's fish poo, urea, oils and fatty acids being broken down by bacteria and all the goodies. If it doesn't smell then it isn't very good. Also, the longer it sits in the cup the more breakdown=more outhouse smell

I used to put a little Kalk in the cup to help kill the smell

I have had several different types of skimmers and thought they were bad, but nothing compares to the aroma, stench would be a better word, of my Life Reef. Ad there are those who say they never clean the collection cup.

My Skimmer has a drain hole in the bottom of the cup. The cup over flows into a Sealed bucket with two rubber lines in the top.... One Is for the skim to go down the other goes up and back into the skimmer Collection cup (in case of over flow )
I put a bit of Bleach in the bucket that collects the trash. The bleach Kills the odor completely....
