Skimmer is a go!

Yes...yes...that's right ladies and gentlemen...I know it's been a long time coming...BUT...

MEL FINALLY HAS A GOOD SKIMMER!! WOOO HOOO!

No need for applause.

We put it in last night and it tried to skim stuff right away (not overflowing or anything but definitely foaming). As per the instructions though I turned it down to let it break in and tonight we will be skim skim skimming away!

Oh and I also have my canopy up with all four lights wired in.

It's a whole new tank I tell you!

Its venturi with a needle wheel then...I have had beckets in the past. To much power to run it and they aren't effecent when they get dirty....

Thanks man

The G4X is the largest one I can get under my sump. I suppose at some point I could always add another one in there if this one ends up being undersized for my bioload.

That would be easy. But for now I'm just freaking glad to have something (rather than the crappy ones I've had or the nothing I've had previously).

You customize the venturi, do the gate valve mod, mesh the needlewheel, do the RC mod, and modify the volute and you won't need another one. It'll probably outperform a Deltec then.

Hah hah...good lord. What is the heck did you just say?

I understand the RC mod and gate valve mod. What is meshing the needlewheel and modifying the volute? I actually haven't heard of those two mods! hah hah.

Glad to know that I won't need to buy another skimmer though.

Donny and Matt have more than one of these and they said that the unmodified one is actually performing the best (last I heard). I know they have one with a gate valve mod and I thought they had one with a recirc mod, but I don't know if they performed the other mods you suggest.

Dave...you don't happen to have links for info on those other two mods, do you? I can probably just look it up later when I get a chance.

IMO the gate valve is only better for "dialing in" a specific foam heighth for wet or dry skimming... The same can be done by adjusting your riser...

Matt and Donny recommended the gate valve mod because of the splashing from the water overflowing the riser tube if you haven't modded it, but I haven't actually had a problem with mine splashing yet.

It is in the middle of one of the sections of the sump and I don't fill it up all the way...so it seems to be ok as far as splashing goes.

You can raise the cylindrical sponge that comes with over where the top of the riser and the water will run down the riser instead of cascading down like a fountain and splashing... Not that I don't recommend the gate valve... I have it on both of mine, just don't think its a necessity, but a luxury...

Actually the cascading effect means that mine doesn't splash much at all, but I was thinking of messing with that sponge height just to see what it would do. Someone on ASMskimmer.com said to raise it all the way up to the top to keep down the splashing. I just don't need to, ya know?

I know what ya mean... Its not all about you Mel... ;) Some other people might be having similar problems... lol :D How about some pics??? Still waiting to see the pink scooter as well... And I'm sure Art and Larry would like to see there handy work completed and operational... :lolspin:

Great to hear about this man, but I can't see anything; where are the pictures!?!? ;)

We haven't done any "mods" to ours other than piping the effluent down rather than letting it splash (a "T" on the top and then a 90 straight down). They are working pretty well, but considering the organic soup they are running in, any skimmer is probably going to cough up some pretty nasty stuff! We may want to try some mods later on though, especially with the G6--without piping the water down, it was basically a 2' waterfall, and quite a bit of it wasn't making it back into the sump! Since it has 3 pumps, maybe a recirc-mod on one or two of them would be a good idea.

Dave, do you know anything about customizing the venturi? I don't think I've heard of doing anything to optimize that, but I'm all-for experimenting a bit with these. Are there any DIY walk-throughs for these mods?

Mel, it will be interesting to see what the skimmer pulls out "stock," then you can slowly modify and see what it is capable of doing.

Yep, I can get Sedra Pumps and parts for them. Which one were you looking for again? I figure if I try a venturi mod or needlewheel mesh and mess it up, I can order another stock one....

Looking for the Sedra 9000... Theres a guy selling one of the mesh modded venturis in the Sales forum... I asked him about it... We'll see... :D
