Skimmer Q&A Thread

Mojo

Just wanted to say thank you for your opinion, and fast response. I appreciate that you took the time to answer my questions.

Mojo-
Your thoughts please on a DAS E-X 3
Whats max size tank realistically?
I will try to look you up @ MACNA:wavehand:
thanks,
Vinny

Yeap I agree with RKaires, The thing is simple and works great. I would say 280 to 400 g depending on your load. Ill be there all three days.

just wondering if the skimz 121 had got that pinwheel update. ive narrowed it down to this one and the sro 1000sss. any preferences.

elos system 70 w 15 g sump. medium to heavy bio w mixed reef.

They are both good, I know I will be picking up my new pinwheel at Macna. I am not sure if they have been shipping with the new wheel yet or not. Ill be curious to see what has changed. If you need it right now I would go with the sro, but I do think the 121 does pull more. I think it is pretty powerful little skimmer.

Hey everyone I am doing research and it seems that SC skimmers are great value for their price. (I posted this in the other thread but thought it would also be good to post it here)

I need some help picking a skimmer for my tank.

55 gallon FO w/14 g sump

it will be stocked with 4 Fish (1 Chromis, Fairy Wrasse Pair, smaller species of Butterflyfish) inverts: cleaner shrimp, snails, hermits

the sump area for the skimmer is L 6 1/4 " x W 9 7/8

(I can also upgrade the sump to a L 10 " x W 9 7/8 footprint)

the skimmers I am looking at are an SWC 120 ($225), BM NAC 3.5 ($180) or an SC 65 ($80).

needless to say I am leaning toward the SC 65.

but I am not sure if it is too small for my application.

any help is appreciated thank you

I had a sc 150 and they work well. But my 121 pulls so much more than the sc 150 did.

out of those three the sc65 would be fine. You might want to think about the nac 6 or vertex in 100 as some other options. The nac 3.5, the swc 120 and the sc 65 all use the same pump. I would try to find something that pulls alittle more water but all in all I would get the sc 65 out of those.

Any suggestions as to a skimmer for a heavly stocked 200gallon FOWLR tank? My max in budget is only a messely $250.

I was looking at the Pacific Coast ps-2000 and ps-3000. Your thoughts on those?

do you think the SC 65 is better than a comparable Reef Octopus NWB-110

What is the maxium water level height in sump internal SRO? I have read only 6.5 max, is thatright.

thats a good height. I think 7 would be max. Every skimmer is different. The max water height for a skimmer is when its wide open and you can no longeradjust it down. I have found that find the spot where the skimmer no longer overflows and then lower the water level another onch below that. That will give you about max performance and reliability

well honestly your best bet is to find something used in that budget for that size. Try to find a warner marine AS 200 or s200. A euroreef 180 and The vertex in180 would be ok but a bit small once fully stocked.

I would probably go with the nw 110. it will cycle more water and it will be easier to get warranty work done if need be.

thanks I always liked that skimmer and the reef octopus brand since I began looking at skimmers :D

I also like the Tunze skimmers but I don't know if any model they sell would fit.

Mojo~ I currently run a Vertex in-100 on my 90 + 20 gallon sump medium bioload mixed reef setup, but I'm looking to increase performance, and am considering the following:

-Keep the in-100 and buy atb mini airstar pump (Sicce psk 1000) or Tunze silence pump
-SRO 2000int
-Octo XS-200

What do you think is the better choice here? Thanks!

I would just upgrade the pump on the vertex. its a good solid design. The psk 600 or 9410 would most likely be enough. The 1000 will work but be prepared to lower the water level of the skimmer. Not sure what you are running it at now.

Haven't cleaned my skimmer for 5 days......looks like it need a cleaning lol

JG1--thats the -IN 100, correct? Looks good. I think I remember you upgrading the pump. How do you like it overall (other than production, lol)
